What Titans said about T'Vondre Sweat arrest, 'tough conversations' before drafting Texas star
The Tennessee Titans did their homework on second-round NFL draft pick T'Vondre Sweat. In fact, they did some extra-credit work, too.
The Titans drafted Sweat with the No. 38 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft on Friday, bringing the 366-pound Outland Trophy winner from Texas into the defensive line room headlined by All-Pro tackle Jeffery Simmons. This pick comes after Sweat was arrested April 7 on suspicion of driving while intoxicated in Austin, Texas.
Sweat's visit with the Titans was on April 8. Titans GM Ran Carthon says Sweat was forthright and honest with the Titans about the incident without deflecting blame or avoiding responsibility for his mistakes.

But given the timing of the visit, Carthon says he came away still wanting to know more about Sweat the person and see if he fit the Titans' culture. So on April 19, one week before drafting Sweat, Carthon flew to Texas with coach Brian Callahan, defensive line coach Tracy Rocker and assistant general manager Anthony Robinson to have brunch with Sweat and his family.
"We flew down to his hometown and spent the morning with him and his mom and his brother and his grandfather and really got to know him as a person and kind of what the expectations would be for us if he was here," Carthon said. "We had some tough conversations while we were there. Not only tough conversations with him but also tough conversations with his family in the room with the understanding that it’s going to take all of us."
Sweat told Nashville media that he has no comment on ongoing legal matters. Per an affidavit obtained by KVUE in Austin, Sweat was involved in a two-car crash where his car was rear-ended. Per the affidavit, he admitted to drinking "two or three shots of tequila."
"He was, I’ll say from a forthright standpoint, he recognized his mistake and the part that he played in it," Carthon said. "But even though someone hit him, he didn’t use that an out or a cop-out. He didn’t play the victim part. He accepted his responsibility and what he’s learned from it so far."
