Titans pick Texas defensive tackle T'Vondre Sweat in 2024 NFL Draft despite arrest this month

The Tennessee Titans selected T’Vondre Sweat with the No. 38 overall pick in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft despite the Texas defensive tackle’s arrest earlier this month.

Sweat was arrested in Austin on April 7 on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. His pre-draft visit with Titans general manager Ran Carthon in Nashville was the day following his arrest, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Sweat, 22, was booked at 2:12 p.m. on April 7. He was released on a $3,000 bond.

According to an affidavit obtained by Austin's KVUE, police said they reported to a crash that involved Sweat's orange Ford Bronco and another blue Dodge. People inside the Bronco told police that the Dodge rear-ended the Bronco and caused it to lose control. Police found Sweat to be intoxicated and he admitted to drinking two to three shots of tequila, according to the affidavit.

That brush with the law was one of the few negatives on the 6-foot-4, 362-pound Texas star's pre-draft resume. Sweat won the Outland Trophy, given to the nation's top interior lineman, and was a first-team Associated Press All-American last season, as well as Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year.

He played in all 14 games with eight starts, recording 45 tackles, eight tackles for loss, two sacks, four PBUs and a blocked kick, helping lead the Longhorns to the Big 12 title and the program's first College Football Playoff appearance.

Sweat was the No. 9 rated defensive tackle at the NFL combine.
