Texas tops UTSA: Score-by-score recap as Arch Manning helps lead Horns to win

With a 3-0 start that includes Saturday's blowout win over UTSA, Texas football has made its case as arguably the best team in the nation.

Texas had to roll over UTSA without starting quarterback Quinn Ewers, who suffered a reported abdominal strain early in the game. Arch Manning entered the contest at quarterback and accounted for five touchdowns.

Final: Texas 56, UTSA 7

Arch Manning steps in for the injured Quinn Ewers and throws for 223 yards and four TDs on 9-of-12 passing and adds a 67-yard touchdown run. Defensive end Ethan Burke caps the game by returning an interception 30 yards for a touchdown as Texas rolls to a resounding win. Next up? Louisiana-Monroe at Royal-Memorial Stadium next week.

13:19 4Q: Texas 49, UTSA 7

Arch Manning, who's in the game for the injured Quinn Ewers, throws his fourth touchdown of the game. This one comes on a fade pattern to Johntay Cook II, who makes a beautiful catch in the back of the end zone. Manning now has, get ready, 223 yards and four TDs on 9-of-12 passing as well as a 67-yard touchdown run. Sometimes the hype is met by the results.

End 3Q: Texas 42, UTSA 7

With Arch Manning in the game for the injured Quinn Ewers, Texas will enter the fourth quarter with a commanding lead over outmanned UTSA. Manning has three TDs and 171 yards on 6-of-9 passing as well as a 67-yard touchdown run, and the Texas offense has amassed 494 yards of offense. We don't yet know how long Quinn Ewers will be sidelined with an apparent abdomen strain, but the performance of Manning, a redshirt freshmen, has to give plenty of confidence to a Longhorn squad ranked No. 3 in the nation and closing in on a 3-0 start to the season.

Is Arch Manning still available on waivers in my fantasy football league? The Longhorn quarterback stands in the pocket and lofts a downfield strike to a wide-open Ryan Wingo for a 75-yard touchdown. Texas is rolling, the fans are celebrating, and even an injured Quinn Ewers flashes a smile despite feeling the pain from a first-half abdomen injury that sent him to the sidelines. Manning has three TDs and 171 yards on 6-of-9 passing as well as a 67-yard touchdown run.

Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers leaves the game early in the second quarter after suffering an apparent abdomen injury against the UTSA Roadrunners at Royal-Memorial Stadium on Saturday. Redshirt freshman Arch Manning came in for Ewers at quarterback and threw for a touchdown and ran for another in the first half.

13:13 3Q: Texas 35, UTSA 7

Arch Manning will get the stats but that 50-yard touchdown was all Isaiah Bond as well as some superb downfield blocking. Bond takes a little swing pass from Manning at midfield, finds a crease and races away from the UTSA dedfense for a score. Manning has now accounted for three touchdowns - two passing and one rushing - since replacing the injured Quinn Ewers in the second quarter.

Halftime: Texas 28, UTSA 7

Arch Manning has taken over for Quinn Ewers at quarterback for Texas. Texas football coach Steve Sarkisian said at haftime that Ewers suffered an abdomen injury, and the quarterback was seen grabbing at his left side while watching the game in street clothes. Before his injury, Ewers threw for 185 yards and a touchdown with an interception on 14-of-16 passing. Manning has 25 yards and a touchdown on 3-of-5 passing, and he also ripped off a 67-yard touchdown run. As a team, Texas amassed 314 yards in t firhest half compared to 188 for UTSA.

3:33 2Q: Texas 28, UTSA 7

Arch Manning takes a big hit on a third-down sack but he gets up quickly and jogs to the sidelines, much to the relief of the home crowd. Texas punter Michael Kern takes the field for the first time in a game that features 298 yards of offense by Texas, with and without quarterback Quinn Ewers.

Texas wide receiver Isaiah Bond runs the ball around UTSA safety Jimmy Wyrick after a catch during the first quarter of the Longhorns' game against the UTSA Roadrunners Saturday at Royal-Memorial Stadium.

11:07 2Q: Texas 28, UTSA 7

Arch Manning! He's not like those other Manning quarterbacks when it comes to using his legs. The 6-foot-4, 225-pound redshirt freshman pulls down the ball and takes off down the right side of the defense for a 67-yard touchdown run. We've all heard about Manning's speed, and he shows it off there.

11:39 2Q: Texas 21, UTSA 7

Fireworks at Royal-Memorial Stadium. Arch Manning enters the game for Quinn Ewers at quarterback for Texas and promptly throws a 19-yard touchdown pass to DeAndre Moore on his first snap. UTSA responds with a 2-play, 75-yard drive that includes a 53-yard touchdown run by Robert Henry. Never a dull moment with the Longhorns.

12:19 2Q: Texas 14, UTSA 0

Good news for Texas fans? Kelvin Banks Jr. has come back into the game and looks fine. But the bad news? After connecting with tight end Gunnar Helm for a 49-yard reception, Quinn Ewers pulled up and went to the ground with what looks like a leg or groin injury. Arch Manning, perhaps the most famous backup in college football history, enters the game to a raucous roar.

End 1Q: Texas 14, UTSA 0

Utter domination by Texas despite a turnover in their own territory when Quinn Ewers threw his second interceoption of the season. Texas has 156 yards on 21 snaps compared to 24 yards on 12 snaps for UTSA. But fans have to be a bit concerned about All-American left tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. after he left the game with an apparent shoulder injury.

0:06 1Q: Texas 14, UTSA 0

An adventurous series of events at the end of the first quarter for Texas. After reaching the UTSA 8-yard line, Texas went backwards after a penalty and a fumble on a backward pass. But on third-and-goal from the 19-yard line, Quinn Ewers finds Johntay Cook II running through the middle of the defense for the sophomore receiver's first career touchdown. Texas has to be a bit concerned about All-American left tackle Kelvin Banks Jr, who walked off grabbing at his right shoulder. Trevor Goosby came in at left tackle to finish the drive.

5:45 1Q: Texas 7, UTSA 0

Maybe slow the Heisman Trophy talk a bit for Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers, who just threw an ill-advised interception in the flat to Owen Pewee. Worse yet, Ewers seemed to be massaging his thumb and throwing hand. But he seems OK on the sidelines. Fortunately for Texas, its defense holds on a fourth-down stop at its own 30-yard line when linebacker David Gbenda and safety Michael Taaffe throw UTSA RB Robert Henry for a loss on fourth-and-1.

9:27 1Q: Texas 7, UTSA 0

Quarterback Quinn Ewers and the Texas offense dissects the UTSA defense on their first drive of the game. Ewers, who entered this weekend as the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy, completed seven of eight passes for 77 yards and a 7-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Bond.

RB Jaydon Blue, S Jelani McDonald ruled out of Saturday's game

Running back Jaydon Blue and safety Jelani McDonald have been ruled out of Saturday's game, according to Texas officials. Blue limped off the field in last week's win over Michigan but returned to the game, and Texas coach Steve Sarkisian indicated this week that Blue would play despite tweaking his right ankle. Reserve running backs Quintrevion Wisner and Jerrick Gibson combined for 66 rushing yards against Michigan, and the two have combined for 155 yards rushing on 33 carries this season.

McDonald, a 6-foot-2, 205-pound sophomore, has rotated in at safety and has three tackles this season. He's suffering from an ankle injury, per Texas officials

Reserve defensive tackle Aaron Bryant has also been ruled out of the game with a knee injury.

RB Jaydon Blue, S Jelani McDonald out?

Per a pregame report from Chip Brown at 247Sports, running back Jaydon Blue and safety Jelani McDonald will miss the Longhorns' game against UTSA. Blue limped off the field in last week's win over Michigan but returned to the game, and Texas coach Steve Sarkisian indicated this week that Blue would play despite tweaking his right ankle.

RB Jaydon Blue expected to go against UTSA

Jaydon Blue, the starting running back for Texas, is expected to start against UTSA after limping off the field in last week's win over Michigan. Blue returned to the game and ended the contest with 22 yards on nine carries, but he did wear a walking boot on his right foot after the game.

However, Blue attended a media session earlier this week without the walking boot, and Texas coach Steve Sarkisian indicated he'd be ready for Saturday's game against UTSA. The coach also praised running backs Quintrevion Wisner and Jerrick Gibson, who combined for 66 rushing yards against Michigan.

DRONING ON

UTSA gave Texas a scare two years ago, but this isn't two years ago. On Saturday, the drone show will be the only reason to stick around in the second half.

LOTS OF SNAPS, LOTS OF POINTS?

Given the pace both of these offenses play at, there will be enough possessions in this game for it to get ugly fast. This should be another game where Steve Sarkisian can get his reserves some valuable reps.
