Tennessee Titans' Treylon Burks proud of a new kind of 'dad bod' he sculpted over summer
Treylon Burks is putting dads everywhere to shame.
"I feel terrific, man," Burks said after the Tennessee Titans' third training camp practice of the preseason Saturday. "I just dedicated myself to (losing weight) and just wanted to grind. It’s just something different that I wanted to try. Obviously it’s helped out a lot since we started camp. I started doing it since the end of OTAs and I wanted to keep doing it all the way through and I just wanted to change my body.
"(I did) a little bit of everything. Running, lifting, eating right. I’ve got a newborn on the way, so I guess it’s the dad bod. I’ll say that."
Burks isn't sporting the stereotypical "dad bod" usually associated with the term. He's proud of his physique, so much so that the wide receiver texted Titans general manager Ran Carthon a picture of his transformed body in the break between OTAs and training camp.
Burks says he's used to cutting roughly five pounds before camp, but this year he wanted to experiment with trimming more. And though he won't say exactly how much weight he has shed, he does say he's "down a lot" and feels significantly better for it.
KNEE INJURY? NO PROBLEM? L'Jarius Sneed was Titans' prized offseason addition. So why isn't he practicing daily?
This is Burks' third training camp, and the atmosphere around him is undeniably different. Two years ago he was thrust in the unenviable position of having to replace A.J. Brown as a rookie. Last season, he was paired with DeAndre Hopkins with a chance to emerge in a co-No. 1 role. This time he's marooned behind Hopkins, Calvin Ridley and Tyler Boyd on the depth chart, taking special teams reps as a return man and gunner to try to earn his way on to the field if receiving opportunities are scarce.
Consider Burks undeterred by all of this. He says he expects his role in coach Brian Callahan's offense to just be Treylon Burks. And when asked if the idea of "being Treylon Burks" has changed in his three years as a pro, he shot down the idea.
"I’m still Treylon," he said.
He'll be Treylon the dad soon enough. His wife, Shelby, is due to have their baby girl on Oct. 6. Fortunately for Burks, that's the Sunday of the Titans' bye week.
"I’m just ready for her to get here," Burks said. "(My teammates have) given me some (advice). You take what you want from it. I’m just ready to witness it myself and go through it. I look (at the calendar) every morning."
