Ryan Tannehill opens up about Tennessee Titans firing Mike Vrabel, drafting Will Levis
Former Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill recently discussed the end of his time in Tennessee, including the team's decisions to fire Mike Vrabel and to draft quarterback Will Levis.
On an episode of Dianna Russini's "Scoop City" podcast, Tannehill gave his perspective on the many changes the Titans went through last year, plus whether he's in the mix for any NFL jobs or if he's considering retiring from football.
Tannehill, 35, is a free agent. He spent five seasons as quarterback for the Titans (2019-2023), arriving in Tennessee via trade from the Miami Dolphins. A first-round draft pick in 2012, Tannehill has 216 career passing touchdowns and 34,881 career passing yards in 11 seasons.
What Ryan Tannehill said about the Titans firing Mike Vrabel
When the Titans fired coach Mike Vrabel on Jan. 9, it was the start of many offseason changes in Tennessee. While Tannehill's decision to walk in free agency was expected prior to Vrabel's firing, he explained he doesn't fully understand why that decision was made.
"I dont know what their reasons were for letting (Vrabel) go," Tannehill said to Russini. "But I'm thankful for my time with him and how he impacted my career."
Tannehill added that he thinks Vrabel was one of the best coaches he ever played for.
"He did a lot of great things," Tannehill said. "How we prepared as a team, how we educated the team on a weekly basis. Situationally, I always felt like we were really good. Game management, I felt like we were really good.”
During Vrabel's tenure, Tannehill led the team to three straight playoff appearances (2019-21). He went 39-24 as a starter, throwing 94 touchdowns and 14,447 yards, adding 21 rushing touchdowns.
Ryan Tannehill on the Titans drafting Will Levis last season
In the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft, the Titans took quarterback Will Levis out of Kentucky. It was a moment that Tannehill saw as an indication the franchise intended to move on from him after his contract ended.
“I would not say it's a fun place to be," Tannehill said. "Obviously, a lot of people have been through it. It's nothing new. It's part of the business."
Tannehill described his relationship with Levis as "good" and having "no animosity" but added that the situation for him was awkward — especially when his November ankle injury became the unofficial moment of transition.
"It's a weird feeling because of the underlying theme of what's trying to happen," Tannehill said. "At the same time, you're doing your best to go out and win football games. Obviously, we weren't winning a lot of games. Then I got injured, right? Which made it happen sooner rather than later.”
Tannehill added there are no hard feelings with Levis, who will enter the Titans' 2024 season as the presumed starter.
“He's a very talented guy. He's big, he's physical," Tannehill said. "He's got a great arm and did some great things when he got in there last year. I wish him nothing but the best.”
Meanwhile, Tannehill is awaiting his NFL future. The 11-year veteran does not have any offers, but he's not ruling it out.
“I'm not waiting on pins and needles for that call," he said. "If something comes up, then fantastic, I'll jump wholeheartedly into it.”
