Tennessee Titans coaching search update: 14 candidates Titans have interviewed, or should
Now that the divisional round of the NFL playoffs is complete, the Tennessee Titans can finally start meeting with certain candidates in-person to interview for the team's head coaching vacancy.
The Titans have completed 10 interviews with head coaching candidates since firing Mike Vrabel on Jan. 9. One of those candidates, Antonio Pierce, already has accepted the head coaching job with the Las Vegas Raiders. Having reached this point in the process, the Titans can set up second interviews with candidates they've already spoken to, or conduct initial interviews with candidates they've yet to meet with, but there are limiting parameters.
The Titans may not embark on a second interview with a candidate whose teams are still alive in the playoffs until Jan. 29 and may not connect for an initial interview with such a coach until his team's season is over.
This means the Titans will not be able to set up follow-up interviews with Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald or Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, or initial interviews with any members of the Ravens, Lions, Kansas City Chiefs or San Francisco 49ers staffs until after the AFC and NFC championship games.
ESTES: Placing odds on candidates in Tennessee Titans' search to replace Mike Vrabel
With those rules in mind, here's an updated list of 14 candidates the Titans are considering or might consider as their next head coach.
Carolina Panthers OC Thomas Brown
Status: Completed interview with Titans
Other teams interested: N/A
Brown has only one year of offensive coordinator experience, and a bad one at that, but he was the associate head coach for the Los Angeles Rams when they won their Super Bowl. The Titans are the only team to interview Brown as a head coach, but the Chicago Bears reportedly have requested to speak to him for their offensive coordinator vacancy.
Cincinnati Bengals OC Brian Callahan
Status: Completed interview with Titans
Other teams interested: ATL, CAR, LAC
Callahan was the first candidate to interview with the Titans, and the team has reportedly reached out to set up a second interview. One of the masterminds behind Cincinnati's impressive passing attack, he would be tasked with developing young Titans quarterback Will Levis the same way he did Bengals star Joe Burrow.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers OC Dave Canales
Status: Has not been requested
Other teams interested: CAR
Canales worked in Seattle from 2010 to 2022 before taking over as Tampa Bay's offensive coordinator this season, leading the team to an NFC South title and reinvigorating quarterback Baker Mayfield's career with a vertical passing attack that has helped the Bucs push onward even after Tom Brady's retirement.
Detroit Lions DC Aaron Glenn
Status: Completed interview with Titans
Other teams interested: ATL, LAC, WAS
A respected leader with 15 years of NFL playing experience, Glenn was recently voted the best defensive coordinator in the NFL by an NFLPA poll. Along with coach Dan Campbell, Glenn has helped kick-start a new Lions culture and make the team one of the NFL's best.
Detroit Lions OC Ben Johnson
Status: Interview requested but not completed with Titans
Other teams interested: ATL, CAR, LAC, SEA, WAS
Just about every team with a vacancy has wanted face time with Johnson this hiring cycle. One of the sharpest young offensive minds in the league, Johnson has turned the Lions' offense into a powerhouse that runs, throws and keeps opponents off balance as well as any team in the league.

Philadelphia Eagles OC Brian Johnson
Status: Completed interview with Titans
Other teams interested: ATL
Johnson has only one year of NFL coordinating experience, though he did spend four years coordinating major college offenses. His Eagles unit started out the year as one of the league's best but fell apart late in the season, bringing question to what his role was in the highs and lows of the season.
New York Giants OC Mike Kafka
Status: Completed interview with Titans
Other teams interested: N/A
Another candidate who has heard from only the Titans this cycle, Kafka looked like a shoo-in to merit head coaching consideration after 2022. But as injuries piled up and star players underperformed in 2023, Kafka became less of a commodity, despite his time learning under offensive gurus Andy Reid and Brian Daboll.
Baltimore Ravens DC Mike Macdonald
Status: Completed interview with Titans
Other teams interested: ATL, CAR, LAC, WAS
The architect of Baltimore's top-rated defense, Macdonald is essentially the defensive equivalent of what Ben Johnson is for offensive candidates. One of the youngest candidates this cycle, Macdonald has thrived in his stints as defensive coordinator at Michigan and with the Ravens.
Baltimore Ravens OC Todd Monken
Status: Has not been requested
Other teams interested: CAR, LAC
Monken is one of the few sought-after offensive coordinator candidates the Titans haven't interviewed yet. A journeyman with college head coaching experience, three stints as an NFL coordinator and multiple championships as a college coordinator, Monken isn't exactly a young up-and-comer, but he has proven himself to be a diverse and eclectic play caller who can make various types of offenses work.
Los Angeles Rams DC Raheem Morris
Status: Has not been requested
Other teams interested: ATL, CAR, LAC, SEA, WAS
The Titans are the only team with a remaining vacancy that has not requested or already spoken with Morris. The former Buccaneers head coach has resurrected his career in the 12 seasons since his first shot at being in charge, most notably helping lead the Rams to a Super Bowl victory.
Dallas Cowboys DC Dan Quinn
Status: Completed interview with Titans
Other teams interested: CAR, LAC, SEA, WAS
Quinn took the Falcons to a Super Bowl in his first stint as a head coach. He was regarded as one of the league's best defensive coordinators before his time in Atlanta began and has regained that mantle since it ended. Quinn turned down head coaching opportunities last offseason but has been a hot commodity this cycle.
Former Stanford coach David Shaw
Status: Completed interview with Titans
Other teams interested: LAC
One of the most respected college coaches of the past decade, Shaw took the 2023 season off after resigning from Stanford at the end of 2022. His offensive acumen is obvious, having developed talents such as quarterback Andrew Luck and running back Christian McCaffrey. And Stanford historically has been one of the toughest schools to win at; he has as many nine-win seasons as Stanford's head coach as all other coaches since World War II have combined.
Houston Texans OC Bobby Slowik
Status: Completed interview with Titans
Other teams interested: ATL, CAR, SEA, WAS
Slowik continues the trend of the Titans seeking out young, less-experienced offensive minds. Slowik has just one year of coordinator experience, but what a year it has been. He developed rookie QB C.J. Stroud into one of the league's best in just one season, and helped the Texans turn things around from cellar dwellers to division champions.
MOCK DRAFT: Tennessee Titans NFL mock draft 1.0: A cornerstone at No. 7 for Mike Vrabel's replacement
Miami Dolphins OC Frank Smith
Status: Has not been requested
Other teams interested: CAR, SEA
Miami's offense was borderline unstoppable at times this season. Smith helped conceptualize it, along with coach Mike McDaniel. He has coached offensive lines and tight ends in the past, so he knows how to design offenses built around speed like that of the Dolphins and in more run-first, physical modes.
