Get to know Aaron Glenn
A former first-round pick who played 15 years in the NFL as a cornerback for the New York Jets, Houston Texans, Dallas Cowboys, Jacksonville Jaguars and New Orleans Saints, Glenn transitioned into coaching in 2014 and has quickly risen through the ranks thanks to his skills as a leader and motivator.
Glenn has been the Lions' defensive coordinator since 2021. The unit hasn’t performed as one of the league’s best; the Lions have ranked 31st, 30th and 23rd in the league in scoring defense in his three seasons in charge. But he also has developed a young group, especially on the defensive line where budding stars such as Aidan Hutchinson, Alim McNeill and James Houston have been extremely productive. Rookies Brian Branch and Jack Campbell also had impressive 2023 seasons, putting the Lions’ defense on an upward trajectory thanks to homegrown talents.
Prior to his arrival in Detroit, Glenn spent five seasons as defensive backs coach in New Orleans, two seasons as assistant defensive backs coach in Cleveland and a couple of years in the Jets’ scouting department. While in New Orleans, Glenn helped develop first-round pick Marshon Lattimore into one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL while also coaching safeties Vonn Bell and Marcus Williams.
As a player, Glenn had 41 interceptions and made three Pro Bowls. He remained productive into his 30s despite the rigors of playing cornerback, logging double-digit passes defended every year between his age-28 and age-33 seasons.
Speaking with the Detroit Free Press this week, Glenn hit one of the most important talking points surrounding the Titans’ coaching conversation, addressing the importance of collaboration between coaches, the personnel department, ownership and to achieve the franchise’s goal.
“And making sure that, that vision, that collective vision, is the same,” Glenn told the Free Press. “Because once that’s intact and you keep — all three of you guys, or women — are saying the same thing, that feeds down to the staff, then that feeds down to the players . . . A coach is about people and you bring the right people in, you’re going to have the right culture.”
