South Carolina baseball to use Ethan Petry as DH for NCAA regional vs JMU
Ethan Petry is in the starting lineup as a designated hitter for South Carolina baseball in an elimination game against James Madison on Sunday (noon, ESPN+) in the NCAA Raleigh Regional.
The sophomore starting first baseman is dealing with a hairline fracture right above his pinky, coach Mark Kingston explained after Saturday's loss to NC State.
Petry was originally in the lineup against NC State but after warmups was taken out of the lineup. Cole Messina moved from catcher to first base for Petry. South Carolina lost 8-6 to the Wolfpack (35-20).
Per the official lineup for Sunday's game, the Gamecocks (37-24) have Dylan Brewer at first base and moved Messina back to catcher. Brewer had two home runs Saturday.

Petry originally injured his hand in the win against James Madison on Friday but played the remainder of the game. Kingston said on Saturday that Petry didn't think he could hold and swing the bat at the level needed to hit against NC State.
In addition to a team-high 21 home runs, Petry is hitting .306, the second-highest on the team. He's scored 57 runs, has 53 RBIs with a slugging percentage of .639 and an on base percentage of .470.
