COLUMBIA — South Carolina baseball's chance of making it to the super regional took a hit after falling 8-6 to NC State on Saturday.

With the loss, the Gamecocks (37-24) moved to an elimination game Sunday (noon), and a rematch against James Madison. South Carolina defeated the Dukes (35-24) in extra innings on Friday.

If South Carolina beats James Madison, the Gamecocks get the Wolfpack (35-20) for a second game on Sunday (6 p.m.). If the Gamecocks win, it all comes down to a third game against NC State on Monday.

While 82% of teams who go 2-0 in the NCAA regionals advance to the super regionals, the Gamecocks have a chance to shake up some history but it starts with a second win over JMU.

FINAL: James Madison 2, South Carolina 0

The Gamecocks got shut out for the first time since April 3 to end their season. South Carolina went three up, three down in the ninth inning with two batters striking out looking.

James Madison adds insurance run in the eighth inning

It was Mike Mancini again hitting a solo home run to give James Madison a 2-0 lead in the eighth inning. South Carolina then made the switch from freshman pitcher Tyler Pitzer to freshman Parker Marlatt with one out in the inning.

JMU turns double play to keep Gamecocks scoreless in seventh inning

South Carolina has not been able to get timely hits against the Dukes. It left two runners stranded in the seventh when James Madison turned a double play to hold its 1-0 lead. The Gamecocks are 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position so far.

Gamecocks leave Ethan Petry stranded at third

Ethan Petry hit a leadoff double to start the sixth inning and advanced to third on a wild pitch. The Gamecocks had no outs on the board when Petry got to third, but they couldn't bring him home to tie the game. South Carolina's last two batters struck out swinging to end the top of the sixth with Petry still on third.

South Carolina holds JMU at bay but can't get on the board through five innings

The Gamecocks only gave up two hits after the first inning to keep James Madison's lead at 1-0. But South Carolina struggled to get runners home and left six runners on base. The Gamecocks logged four hits and drew two walks, but they hit 1-for-8 with runners on in the first five innings.

South Carolina couldn't get any offense going to start the game. James Madison got on the board first with a solo home run from sophomore infielder Mike Mancini to take a 1-0 lead.

Ethan Petry back in lineup at designated hitter for South Carolina

Star first baseman Ethan Petry did not play in South Carolina's loss to NC State on Saturday. Gamecocks coach Mark Kingston said on the broadcast that Petry was not playing due to a hairline fracture in his left hand, which was hit by a pitch Friday.

Petry returned to the lineup Sunday at the designated hitter spot.

South Carolina over JMU 7-5. This will likely be another close game but it all really depends on Ethan Petry's status. The Dukes are talented and gave the Gamecocks ample trouble on Friday but the defense was poor for South Carolina in the win. If Petry is back, Cole Messina gets hot again, and the Gamecocks play a error free game like Saturday, it could be another South Carolina win.
