How much the game at Florida State means to Memphis football, both in money and on field
Memphis football hopes it comes back from Tallahassee on Saturday with a signature win.
It already will be coming back to the Bluff City with $1.3 million, which is how much Florida State is paying Memphis for the game. That's according to the official contract for the game, which was signed in 2020.
The game originally was slated for Week 1 on Aug. 31, but the contract was amended in 2021 to change the date to Sept. 14.
Florida State played during college football's Week 0, falling on a last-second field goal to Georgia Tech in Dublin. The Seminoles then played on Labor Day and lost to Boston College 28-13. They are going into Saturday (11 a.m. CT, ESPN) with an 0-2 record, a stunner for a team that entered the season ranked No. 10 in the country.
The game is also a one-off, and there are no further games currently planned between the two schools. It's the first meeting between them since 1990.
Memphis typically plays one power conference team each season. That was Missouri last year, and it will be Arkansas in 2025, 2026 and 2028.
While Florida State has struggled, Memphis has been cruising. The Tigers are 2-0, having shut out North Alabama in Week 1 and then dispatched Troy 38-17 in Week 2. Both of those games were at home; after the trip to Tallahassee, they will face Navy on Sept. 21 in Annapolis, Maryland.
The Tigers earned the No. 25 spot in the US LBM Coaches Poll in Sunday's rankings, the first time they've entered the rankings since 2020.
The game against Florida State will have plenty of storylines. Chief among them is the coaching matchup — former Memphis coach Mike Norvell against Ryan Silverfield, who worked under him and got the job after Norvell left for Tallahassee. Several former Memphis coaches are also on Florida State's current staff.
