MLB stadium rankings 2024: Is Arizona Diamondbacks' Chase Field really that bad?

The Arizona Diamondbacks' stadium situation continues to be a big issue for the MLB franchise, with owner Ken Kendrick saying Monday that "we may run out of time in Phoenix."

But is the team's ballpark, Chase Field in Phoenix, really that bad?

Does it really need as much work as Kendrick and the MLB franchise suggests?

Take a look at what recent MLB stadium rankings for 2024 say about the DBacks' playing venue to get a picture for how some writers view the ballpark in downtown Phoenix, which opened in 1998 and features a pool in the outfield stands.

There are 30 Major League Baseball stadiums.

‘We may run out of time in Phoenix’: Diamondbacks frustrated with Chase Field deal

Sportsnaut: Diamondbacks' Chase Field No. 27 ranked baseball stadium

Matt Johnson writes: "A state-of-the-art ballpark when it opened in 1998, Chase Field has slipped rapidly down MLB stadium rankings in the years since. It looks more like an airline’s hangar than a ballpark. It’s not located in an ideal location and the interior is just as off-putting as the view from a few miles away. Chase Field shouldn’t be on anyone’s bucket list because it’s one of the last places you would want to watch a baseball game."

Sports Illustrated: Arizona's Chase Field comes in at No. 25 in MLB stadium rankings

Dan Gartland writes: "Phoenix’s stadium is enormous (48,405 seats, the third biggest in the majors). When it’s packed and rocking like it was during the World Baseball Classic, that’s great. But the Diamondbacks don’t consistently draw big crowds, so the stadium just ends up feeling empty."

Stadium Journey: DBacks' Chase Field at No. 20 in ranking of MLB ballparks

Meg Minard writes: "Chase Field provides good game day enjoyment and it is easy to reach and traverse. The swimming pool and the retractable roof and panels offer unique elements to the ballpark. A recommendation is to visit early in the season (April) to enjoy a game with the roof open."

NorthJersey.com: Arizona Diamondbacks' Chase Field ranked No. 23 among MLB stadiums

Pete Caldera writes: "Resembles an airplane hangar, but the retractable roof is a necessity in downtown Phoenix, where the daily average summer high temperatures exceed 100 degrees."

USA TODAY Sports: DBacks' Chase Field ranked No. 27 in MLB stadium rankings

Andrew Joseph writes: "The Diamondbacks and Maricopa County have been in a standoff over millions of dollars of repairs for the stadium, which has Chase Field quickly becoming one of the worst venues in the league. The roof is no longer safe to open when fans are present (they think the cables *could* snap and injure people). The air-conditioning system hardly works now, so when the roof is closed, the stadium is a sauna. Random panels on the already-dated videoboard are damaged, so you’re stuck staring at a reminder that the stadium is falling apart. I can go on, but you get the point."

A different view about the Arizona Diamondbacks' Chase Field?

USA TODAY has a readers' choice 2024 competition for the best MLB stadium and Chase Field currently comes in at No. 16 in fan voting.

SB Nation also has Chase Field ranked No. 16 in its MLB stadium rankings, with Michael Elizondo writing of the venue: "It is not a bad park. It does feel a bit like an aircraft hangar with the roof closed. However, if the choice is scorching heat or feeling like you got lost on the way to GenCon, I pick the latter. It might be worth coming back when I know the roof will be open. Dodger fans will likely have to wear the 2023 NLDS for a few years when they visit Phoenix. The Dodgers visit Chase Field on April 29-May 1 and August 30-September 2."

That's a lot better than being at the bottom of the list, like the DBacks' stadium is on other lists ranking the top MLB ballparks.
