Miami Dolphins predictions for 2024 NFL season: Experts make their Super Bowl picks

It's Super Bowl or bust for the Miami Dolphins in 2024. As the NFL season kicks off tonight, can they achieve their goal?

There's certainly enough star power for a deep playoff run. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, receiver Tyreek Hill and coach Mike McDaniel signed lucrative extensions before the season, locking in the core of one of the NFL's most high-powered offenses. Rookie Jaylen Wright adds to the stable of speedy running backs alongside Raheem Mostert and De'Von Achane, and the wide receiver room added Odell Beckham Jr. to assist Hill and Jaylen Waddle.

The Dolphins' problems have never been the offseason, though, or even the start of the season. Under McDaniel, Miami has gone 5-3 and 6-2 through October, only to see AFC East title hopes crumble down the stretch. They've made the playoffs both years but haven't won a postseason game since 2000.

How will the Dolphins do in 2024? Here's what experts predict for this season:

USA TODAY: Tua Tagovailoa wins NFL MVP

Lorenzo Reyes predicted the Dolphins to win the AFC East and make the AFC championship game. He also named quarterback Tua Tagovailoa as his MVP choice. Jarrett Bell was the only other member of USA TODAY's six-member panel to pick Miami to win the AFC East, and he picked Tyreek Hill as his Offensive Player of the Year.

USA TODAY's win projection had the Dolphins finishing 9-8 and missing the playoffs.

ESPN: Miami Dolphins reach AFC championship ... at least

Seth Walder writes: "I'm a believer in coach Mike McDaniel and his offense. Even though it slowed down in the stretch run last season, the Miami offense ranked second in EPA per play in 2023. That type of production over a whole season bodes well for future performance. Plus, if the Dolphins can get a full season from cornerback Jalen Ramsey and edge rusher Jaelan Phillips, that will go a long way toward solidifying the defense."

ESPN has Miami ranked 11th in its Football Power Index and gives them a 60.4% chance to make the playoffs. It projects the Dolphins to win 9.5 games.

Sporting News: Miami Dolphins go 8-9, miss playoffs

Vinnie Iyer has the New York Jets winning the AFC East and the Buffalo Bills getting a wild-card berth. "The Dolphins' fade out of the playoffs in the natural course of parity rotation," he writes.

ClutchPoints: Miami Dolphins make AFC championship

Douglas Fritz says Tua Tagovailoa will set a new career high for touchdowns and De'Von Achane will become a bonafide NFL star. "Achane should blow past 1,000 yards rushing and threaten 1,500 total yards to go along with 15 total touchdowns," Fritz writes.

Our Dolphins season predictions: Super Bowl, or bust? Here's what we think will happen

The Athletic: Miami Dolphins fight to reach 10 wins

Jim Ayello writes: "I expect coach Mike McDaniel to field another offensive juggernaut while unleashing some new wrinkles that most defenses won’t be able to handle. I’m concerned about Miami’s defensive line without Christian Wilkins but also love the system new DC Anthony Weaver is implementing. I think Miami gets off to another hot start but will have to fight to get to 10 wins against what looks like a very tough closing slate (at Packers, vs. Jets, at Texans, vs. 49ers, at Browns, at Jets)."

Austin Mock's NFL betting model simulator has Miami winning 9.5 games.

NFL.com: Miami Dolphins make playoffs as a wild card

Cynthia Frelund ran 1 million simulations of every game to conclude that Miami will win 10 games and make the playoffs. "Injuries took a bit of a bite out of the Dolphins' win total. However, head coach Mike McDaniel's ability to scheme does take some of the sting out of that bite," she writes. "For example, Tua Tagovailoa had an average time to throw of just 2.36 seconds last season, which was a tenth of a second quicker than any other quarterback. And Tua still managed to target intermediate routes (10 to 20 air yards) at the fourth-highest rate in the NFL (25 percent).

PhinPhanatic: Miami Dolphins start 7-0 and win AFC East

Brian Miller writes: "The AFC East will be tough, but the Dolphins should be able to get over the line this time. This will be another nail-biter down to the end of the season, but it might just be the Dolphins and Jets competing for the division crown."

CBS Sports: 4 of 6 writers pick Miami Dolphins to make playoffs

John Breech was the only one on CBS' panel to pick the Dolphins to win the AFC East. Ryan Wilson and Jared Dubin have them in second, and Tyler Sullivan picked them third, but all had Miami earning wild-card berths. Pete Prisco and Will Brinson had the Dolphins in third place and missing the postseason. No one picked the Dolphins to reach the Super Bowl.
