LSU baseball rallies again to beat Wofford to advance in NCAA regional bracket

In an elimination game, how you start is magnified as the pressure is amplified. But how you finish ultimately wins games.

No. 2 LSU baseball just simply did not get off to a good start against No. 3 Wofford at the Chapel Hill Regional on Sunday. Senior pitcher Nate Ackenhausen started the game for the Tigers and couldn't get out of the first inning as Wofford's lineup just laid down multiple bunts for hits. Senior catcher Alex Milazzo was called for catcher interference and a run scored off of that.

Before the first frame was over, the Terriers has pushed five runs across and had backed the Tigers into the proverbial corner.

But LSU has been in that position a number of times and that experience allowed it to answer back. Thanks to star reliever Griffin Herring, their improved approach with runners in scoring position and cashing in on Wofford mistakes, the Tigers erased the deficit by the seventh inning en route to pulling away to 13-6 win at Boshamer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

LSU (42-22) amassed 21 hits in the rallying victory. The Tigers advance to set up a rematch with No. 1 seed North Carolina (45-12) later Sunday night (5 p.m. CT, ESPN+).

Star reliever Griffin Herring delivers with LSU baseball's season on the line

LSU would've liked to forget that first inning. But when you've got a pitcher like Griffin Herring in the stable, the comfortability a coach has in keeping the opposing team at bay likely doesn't get higher.

With the Tigers' season hanging in the balance and looking at an early 5-0 deficit, LSU coach Jay Johnson turned to his best reliever and Griffin Herring gave his team exactly what it needed. The crafty left-hander masterfully navigated his longest appearance on the year, pitching 6⅓ innings, allowing one run on four hits with six strikeouts. It was the longest outing in Herring's career at LSU.

Herring immediately cooled off Wofford's hot offense in that first frame, providing the Tigers the time to mount their comeback.

LSU baseball's offense has better day with runners in scoring position

If the Tigers were going to climb out of the early deficit to the Terriers, they were going to have to slash it better with runners in scoring position than they had the first couple of days at the Chapel Hill Regional.

Through the first two games, LSU managed just a 2-for-9 mark with runners at second or third. It matched that hit total in its first three at-bats on Sunday. Jake Brown recorded a single with a runner standing on second that shrunk Wofford's lead to 5-2.

Ashton Larson recorded the Tigers' third hit in the fourth and trimmed the deficit to 5-3.

The Tigers ended the game 7-for-15 with runners in scoring position.

In the second inning, Terriers starting pitcher Cam Wicker toed the rubber then the ball slipped out of his hand. That awarded Larson second base. Two batters later, Brown slapped one back up the middle and Larson came around to score LSU's first run.

The Tigers made it a 5-3 ballgame in the fourth one pitch after a wild pitch from Wicker. Michael Braswell advanced to second base on the mishap and then Larson singled a hot one past Wofford's first baseman Tyler Hare to plate Braswell the very next offering.

Those runs led to LSU clawing its way back into the game by the fifth frame.
