LSU baseball quiets Charlie Condon, Georgia to win SEC Baseball Tournament 1st round game

Amidst pressure, LSU baseball didn't flinch and applied even more to its opponent.

In each of the first two innings, the Tigers loaded the bases with a mix of two-strike hitting, led by Tommy White and Michael Braswell, and walks. And Josh Pearson was the deliverer.

Pearson had three RBIs in the first two innings to lift No. 11 LSU past No. 6 Georgia 9-1 in a first-round, single-elimination game at the SEC Baseball Tournament at the Hoover Met in Hoover, Alabama.

LSU (37-20) advances in the winners bracket and will face No. 3 Kentucky (39-12) Wednesday morning at 9:30 a.m.

It was the matchup any Tiger and Bulldog fan was looking forward to coming into the SEC Tournament opening contest. LSU's hottest pitcher Gage Jump matching up with college baseball's best hitter, Georgia's Charlie Condon, who's blasted a nation-leading 35 home runs this season.

Condon is a phenomenal hitter. But on this day, Jump bested him by shifting his eye level with high and low pitches, as well as moving his spots from inside to staying mostly outside with his locations. Jump's strategy worked as Condon flew out in his first two at-bats and lined out to third on his third plate appearance.

Jump stayed ahead in counts throughout his outing, not just against Condon, getting to two-strike counts against 13 of the first 17 batters he faced and retired 18 of the last 19 batters he went up against. The sophomore left-hander navigated seven innings, giving up one earned run off four hits, one walk with seven strikeouts on a season-high 105 pitches.

Condon went 0-for-4 on the day.

LSU's Tommy White stays hot, Josh Pearson delivers

White has been single-handedly carrying the Tigers offense the last few weeks. And the slugger carried that momentum over into Hoover, starting the game against Georgia 2-for-2 with a run scored.

That run White scored came off two-run single that Pearson shot back up the middle. Pearson batted in the first three runs LSU scored against the Bulldogs and scored the fourth off freshman Steven Milam's basehit in the fifth frame.

Pearson's hot start allowed the Tigers to grab the early lead and never relinquish it. White finished the game 3-for-6 with an RBI added in the ninth while Pearson went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run.

The Tigers pounded out 12 hits against Georgia with leadoff Michael Braswell, freshman Steven Milam and senior catcher Alex Milazzo, who had two RBIs, each with multiple hits.

LSU baseball NCAA Tournament projections

With the win over Georgia, who came into the game with a top-6 RPI, the doubts of whether or not LSU should deserve an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament should be gone.

Nearly all experts believed that one win at the SEC Tournament would seal the deal for the Tigers. Some even thought LSU was in after last weekend's sweep over Ole Miss.

LSU's RPI was 30 coming into Tuesday while its KPI was 21. The Tigers now have a winning record in Quad 1 and 2 games at 19-18.
