LSU baseball commit Cam Caminiti selected by Atlanta Braves in 1st round of 2024 MLB Draft
LSU baseball commit Cam Caminiti was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the first round of the 2024 MLB Draft Sunday night.
The Saguaro (Scottsdale, Arizona) High School star pitcher came into draft night as one of the top-two rated high school pitching prospects in the country and was rated a top-15 overall player in this year's MLB Draft, per MLB.com. Caminiti was the No. 24 overall pick.
The cousin of former National League MVP Ken Caminiti, the left-hander quickly followed Konnor Griffin, another LSU baseball commit who was taken by the Pittsburgh Pirates No. 9 overall, in coming off the board in the draft. LSU coach Jay Johnson and his staff knew that Caminiti would have to fall far enough in the MLB Draft in order for him to consider coming to campus, and with the recruit going in the first round, it's unlikely he plays for the Tigers.
Caminiti reclassified from 2025 to 2024 and is one of the youngest players in the MLB Draft at 17 years old. But he doesn't play like he's that young as he carries and commands a 93 to 95 mph fastball, a pitch that has gotten up to 98 before.

Per MLB Network, many MLB scouts believe that Caminiti can iron out a full, four-pitch arsenal as he has shown good spin rates on his curveball as well as a slide. This season, while helping lead Saguaro to its first state championship in 13 seasons, he worked in a changeup that proved to be effective enough to become a go-to pitch for him.
Caminiti did play some in the field at centerfield and does hit the ball well, batting .493.
