Jazz draft picks eager to start Summer League

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4 Sports) – With Summer League set to start on Monday, all three of the Utah Jazz NBA Draft picks were in town on Tuesday to begin practicing with the team.

With such a young team already, Cody Williams, the #10 overall pick, thinks bonding with the team will be that much easier.

“I think the biggest thing we have is that with young rosters, the locker room is going to be really close,” said Williams, who will wear #5 for the Jazz. “Guys can kind of bond and connect and really learn with each other as you go through the season.”

Williams battled through injuries in his only season at Colorado, but has shown a ton of potential. Even at 19 years of age, he knows how to impress Jazz coaches.

“I think the biggest impact I can make is on the defensive end,” Willliams said. “For me coming in, especially as a rookie, with my length and my size, my versatility, the best I can bring is on the defensive end.:

Williams is wise beyond his years, and it helps that his brother Jalen is already a star in the NBA.

“You just don’t get a chance to get that growing up,” said Jazz general manager Justin Zanik. “It’s not like every family has an NBA players running around. I also think he’s smart. He’s good at figuring things out and figuring things out quick.”

Former USC point guard Isaiah Collier really thought he’d be picked higher than 29, so he’s going to use that as motivation as he begins his NBA career.

“It’s motivation just playing in the NBA,” said Collier, who will wear #13. “Playing against a great level of talent, that’s a blessing in disguise already. I have to prove myself regardless, and I’m just happy to be in this situation.”

As a bigger point guar dat 6-3, 205 pounds, Collier wants to show he can run an NBA offense.

“Just showing off my passing ability, finding my bigs and finding shooters,” said Collier. “I think just keeping it simple.”

Kyle Filipowski was projected as a first round pick, so when he fell to the Jazz in the second round with the #32 overall pick, they jumped all over him.

“Our entire staff couldn’t really believe that he was there,” Zanik said. “We basically ran to the podium when our pick was up. We were thrilled.”

The first round snub didn’t bother Filipowksi too much, as he felt he has been disrespected for much of his career.

“I think that’s kind of been who I am my whole life, to be honest,” said Filipowski, who will wear #22 for the Jazz. “I’m kind of a guy that’s overlooked. But what I’m most excited about is even though it was day two that I got picked, I’m just excited for being picked to the right place.”

The Salt Lake City Summer League runs July 8-10 at the Delta Center, and all three rookies are eager to show the fans their games.

“Just learning,” Williams said about his summer goals. “I’m not really going into summer league with like, I want to do this, I want to do that. For me, I want to go into some of these having my first experience playing NBA games. I want to learn everything I can. Obviously, I want perform well, but for me, I just want to go out there, enjoy the experience.”

“Definitely just compete,” Collier said. “I think it’s going to be as simple as that, competing every single time down the court. I think that’s going to be the biggest thing.”

“I’m trying to come in here and learn as much as I can,” Filipowski added. “I feel like this is a new home for me. They want to make me feel welcomed and they’re doing a great job of that. So, I’m just coming in and being ready to work hard and learn every day. I’m just excited to be surrounded by these people.”
