Here's what Memphis Grizzlies can do after waiving Mamadi Diakite opened roster spot

Just when things got quiet for the Memphis Grizzlies this offseason, the team suddenly made one more transaction.

The Grizzlies waived forward Mamadi Diakite on Tuesday, opening up a roster spot. Because they don't have many rotation questions, filling Diakite's roster spot may not be an immediate need, but it is a notable move.

Memphis now has 14 players under standard contracts with the option of adding a 15th. All three of the Grizzlies' two-way contract slots are occupied.

Tax implications, depth and development are all elements to factor into their next move.

Here are three ways they could address the open roster spot.

Promote a two-way player

The team has assembled a talented group of players on the two-way contracts: point guard Scotty Pippen Jr., rookie guard Cam Spencer and center Jay Huff.

An argument can be made that each player is deserving. Pippen has been the most productive of the three after a standout summer league showing and promising results last season with the Grizzlies. Spencer, a 2024 second-round pick, is one of the draft's top shooters and proved in summer league that his 3-point stroke was no fluke. Huff is the most recently acquired, but his 7-foot-1 frame and ability to shoot 3-pointers while protecting the rim would be a welcomed depth piece at center.

Pippen and Huff make the most sense, because neither can be on two-way contracts after this season. Memphis can always re-visit Spencer's contract ahead of next season, but the clock is ticking for Pippen and Huff. As of now, they would not be allowed to be active for more than 50 games this season while on a two-way deal.

Leave 15th spot open for future flexibility

The team doesn't have to be in a rush. There's no rule saying the 15th spot needs to be filled. The Grizzlies have enough depth and versatility on the roster to carry 14 players into the regular season. That will allow them the flexibility to use it if injuries lead to depth issues, or in a scenario where they acquire two players and trade one.

Add depth piece

Memphis has depth, but if you want to get picky, certain areas could use some extra assurance. It has the capability to play Zach Edey, Brandon Clarke and Jaren Jackson Jr. at center for large stretches of games. That trio, respectively, includes a rookie, an undersized center and a player whose defensive rebounding and blocking stats have been somewhat concerning at the 5.

The primary backup to Ja Morant is another option, but Derrick Rose could be used in that role, plus Desmond Bane has grown as an on the ball option.

If a depth piece is the choice, adding a cheap center who keeps Memphis under the tax but adds physicality and size would be the move.
