Memphis Grizzlies waive forward Mamadi Diakite, opening roster spot

The Memphis Grizzlies are waiving Mamadi Diakite, the team announced Tuesday morning.

Diakite was acquired by the Grizzlies in a July trade that sent former Grizzlies wing Ziaire Williams to the Brooklyn Nets. Memphis also acquired the draft rights for Nemanja Dangubic in that deal.

Diakite has played four NBA seasons and appeared in games for five teams. He has averaged 3.1 points per game in 55 career appearances and six starts.

Moving Diakite opens a roster spot for the Grizzlies. As The Commercial Appeal reported in July, the team planned to have an open roster spot for future flexibility. It has 14 players on standard contracts and all of its three two-way deals solidified.

Memphis could use that 15th spot for depth or leave it open while determining if it will become a luxury tax team by the NBA’s February 2025 trade deadline.

The Grizzlies will open training camp in Nashville on Oct. 1. Preseason action begins Oct. 7 against the Mavericks in Dallas.
