Memphis Grizzlies' draft pick, Team Canada's Zach Edey to skip Olympics, focus on NBA prep

Grizzlies draft pick Zach Edey will not be playing for Team Canada at the Paris Olympics this summer as he begins his pro career with Memphis, the Canadian national team announced Sunday.

Edey was included on Canada's preliminary roster for the Olympics, which begin July 26. But training camp and exhibitions with the national team conflict with the NBA summer league, which for the Grizzlies starts July 8 in Salt Lake City.

The 7-foot-4, 300-pound Edey won back-to-back Wooden Awards at Purdue and was selected by the Grizzlies with the No. 9 pick in last week's NBA draft. He said during his introductory news conference on Friday that he would discuss his summer plans with Grizzlies officials before making a decision.

"Since last summer I am been training and competing nonstop to achieve my goals of winning a national championship at Purdue and making it to the NBA," Edey said in a statement. "I have a duty now to properly prepare for all that is coming my way with being drafted by the Memphis Grizzlies. The work I put in this summer on my body and my game is critical for me to be the best version of myself."

Edey noted that he'll be Team Canada's "biggest fan from this side of the Atlantic."

Fellow 2024 draft picks Cam Spencer and Jaylen Wells will be on the summer league team, as will second-year forward GG Jackson.

Edey, a Toronto native, said he hopes to play for Team Canada in the future. Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke, who is from Vancouver, is still working back to full health from the Achilles injury that cost him most of the 2023-24 season. Former Grizzlies forward Dillon Brooks, who is now with the Houston Rockets, is from Mississaugua, just south of Toronto, and is on the Team Canada training camp roster.

There could still be a Grizzlies player in the Olympics, though. Santi Aldama was named to the Spain squad that will take part in an Olympic qualifying tournament ahead of the Games. If Spain makes it, Aldama likely would be involved.
