Greg McElroy apologizes to Tony Vitello, Tennessee baseball for rant: 'I'm very, very sorry'

Greg McElroy on Tuesday came under fire for his diatribe against Tony Vitello and his "antics" following Tennessee baseball's first College World Series national title.

On Wednesday, the former Alabama quarterback-turned-college football commentator offered a mea culpa for what he said of Vitello during the "McElroy & Cubelic In the Morning" show. He pointed toward issues in his own life and his opinions on the state of society as reasons for his comments, adding that it should have been a day of celebration for Vols fans.

"I want to start just by apologizing to Tony Vitello and the Tennessee Volunteers," McElroy said. "I took a shot at them yesterday and it wasn't necessary. My frustrations about where we're at in society boiled over. It was unnecessary.

"Yesterday should have been an accomplishment of what Tennessee accomplished on the baseball field, as opposed to a stream of consciousness, basically diatribe, about all the things that are bothering me in my personal life and all the things that are bothering me right now with where we're at in society."

In particular, McElroy seemed to take offense to Vitello's actions in postgame as he celebrated his team's first-ever national championship. Among his offenses: jumping into a crowd of Vols supporters at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska and celebrating with his players after receiving a Gatorade bath.

Said McElroy of Vitello on Tuesday:

"He's like a WWE character and it's embarrassing, seriously. To be an adult, I'd be appalled. I really would. I know he wins and he's great and the kids love him and all that stuff. That's awesome, but if that was a leader of my organization I would have to have a little talking to him. I just would. It's unbelievable."

McElroy reversed course on Wednesday and said he would celebrate the Vols' victory moving forward (at least, as much as a former Crimson Tide player could):

"I'm as happy for you bringing it home last night, or two nights ago, as anybody that wears crimson and can be in their college experience," McElroy said. "So, happy for that, and it wasn't the right place or time.

"So I wanted to make sure everybody understands that I'm very, very sorry and that I will celebrate with you moving forward as opposed to being frustrated little nitpicking moments that might have rubbed me the wrong way."
