We may be one week out from the return of the NFL, but there was plenty of college action this weekend to keep football fans satiated. For Week 1 in college football, there are plenty of ugly blowouts as the most powerful teams in the country often schedule their opening games against considerably weaker opponents. Such was the case for the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Ohio State, coming off an 11-2 season which ended with an ugly 14-3 loss to Missouri in the Cotton Bowl, began their quest to return to the College Football Playoffs against the in-state Akron Zips. Predictably, Akron was no match for the Buckeyes, who dominated the Zips in a 52-6 blowout. But there was one player who truly shined for Ohio State, and his name should be familiar to the 12's.

True freshman Jeremiah Smith, only 18 years old, made it a long afternoon for Akron's defensive backs. In his debut, he led the team with six receptions for 92 yards and two touchdowns. Why should his name be familiar? Well, aside from the common last name of 'Smith,' he is the cousin of Seattle Seahawks starting quarterback Geno Smith!

Turns out playing football at a high level runs in the Smith family.

Unfortunately, being a true freshman, we are going to have to wait at least three years until he can join his older cousin in the NFL. Hopefully, Geno Smith will still be in the league by then!
