Ethan Bonner makes Miami Dolphins' 53-man roster in undrafted success story

MIAMI GARDENS — Miami Dolphins general manager Chris Grier revealed Wednesday that multiple NFL teams tried to trade for cornerback Ethan Bonner, who played in three games, including a playoff loss at Kansas City, last season.

"Ethan played a little bit for us last year and the thing we love about him is he is a smart player, he’s very competitive," Grier said. "We’ve had a number of teams try to trade for him in the offseason, even last year, and so very excited for his opportunity and he’s taken advantage of whatever time he’s had."

Bonner, 24, was an undrafted rookie from Stanford last season.

With Cam Smith injured, Bonner is the Dolphins' clear No. 2 cornerback option behind starter Kendall Fuller.

"Kendall's been a player in this league for a while," Bonner said Wednesday. "Has a lot of experience. So it's always fun to just kind of pick his brain and just kind of talk about how he sees the play and different route concepts and just all the little ins and outs of the play, little things you can pick up on that can help you throughout the play. Just really being a... it's a very good feel for route concepts and timing."

Bonner failed to make the team as a rookie but was added to Miami's practice squad.

One of the fastest players on a team of very fast players, this year there seemed little doubt Bonner would make Miami's 53-man roster.

Once it was confirmed, though, Ethan reached out to his Mom.

"She was super stoked," Bonner said, adding, "She didn't really play sports, but she was a cheerleader and she'll tell you that I get my athletic ability from her."

If Bonner were to be called upon to play, how confident does he feel?

"I trust in my technique," Bonner said. "I trust in the guys around me. I trust in my ability to execute as deep as possible."
