Dramatic finish sends Washington to sixth IHSA dual-team state championship

BLOOMINGTON — Add another state championship for the Washington boys wrestling program.

The Panthers repeated as Class 2A dual-team state champions on Saturday, defeating Lombard Montini 30-28 to win the program's sixth state title since 2016. Washington has a total of eight state trophies in that span, six titles and two runners-up.

Washington dramatically won this one. At one point, the Panthers trailed 25-15 with five matches remaining before reeling off a pin and three decisions to rally for the title. Panthers heavyweight Sean Thornton defeated Montini's Michael Ranquist, 6-4, in the final bout to earn his team three points and the win.

Earlier on Saturday, the Panthers defeated Chicago Brother Rice in a state semifinal.

The Panthers won 10 matches in the semifinal, six by pin. Securing wins by fall were: Eli Gonzalez (126 pounds), 138-pound individual state champion Wyatt Medlin, Cael Miller (165), Josh Hoffer (190), Wyatt Leman (215) and Sean Thornton (285). Logan Makiney (113) won by major decision, Noah Woods (120) by tech fall and Timmy Smith (132) along with Tyler Brown (150) by decision.

On Friday, Washington defeated Wauconda, 49-13, in the quarterfinals to advance to Saturday's semifinals. The Panthers secured 11 of the 14 victories including four falls. Peyton Cox (144 pounds), Miller (165), Hoffer (190) and Thornton (285) all posted pins. A 19-3 tech fall by Medlin over Cooper Daun was another Washington highlight.
