Washington wrestling wins state semifinal, one win away from championship repeat

BLOOMINGTON — Add another state trophy to the case for the Washington boys wrestling program.

The reigning state champions defeated Chicago Brother Rice to win a Class 2A dual-team state semifinal on Saturday morning at Grossinger Motors Arena. The Panthers will wrestle 6 p.m. Saturday for the state championship — having already secured its eighth state trophy since 2016 — including five state titles and two runners-up.

Washington will face the winner of the semifinal between Chatham Glenwood and Lombard Montini.

The Panthers won 10 matches in the semifinal against Brother Rice, six by pin. Securing wins by fall were: Eli Gonzalez (126 pounds), 138-pound individual state champion Wyatt Medlin, Cael Miller (165), Josh Hoffer (190), Wyatt Leman (215) and Sean Thornton (285). Logan Makiney (113) won by major decision, Noah Woods (120) by tech fall and Timmy Smith (132) along with Tyler Brown (150) by decision.

On Friday, Washington defeated Wauconda, 49-13, in the quarterfinals to advance to Saturday's semifinals. The Panthers secured 11 of the 14 victories including four falls. Peyton Cox (144 pounds), Miller (165), Hoffer (190) and Thornton (285) all posted pins. A 19-3 tech fall by Medlin over Cooper Daun was another Washington highlight.
