Detroit Tigers fans split on new City Connect uniforms: 'I actually don't mind the jerseys'

The Detroit Tigers' new alternate uniforms are here.

The Tigers unveiled their City Connect jerseys on Monday, part of the fourth edition of Nike's alternate MLB uniform series that began in 2021, with a jersey that says Motor City and diverts from the club's traditional look. The black and blue automotive-inspired uniforms will be worn this weekend for the Tigers' first two games against the Houston Astros on Friday and Saturday.

The Tigers made the announcement with a two-minute video online that featured iconic Detroit locations, cars and views while mixing in shots of the uniform while playing a song that featured Detroit musicians such as Gmac Cash before sneaking in Eminem for a cameo at the end.

The Tigers paid homage to Detroit's deep connection with the car industry. The Black jerseys have "MOTOR CITY" written across the chest in white, while their are blue marks resembling tire treads behind the lettering. There are other nods, such as a "1" patch on a sleeve as a nod to the M-1 road sign signaling Woodward Ave., racing stripes and a Vehicle Identification Number like the ones attached to new cars.

The City Connect uniforms will be worn on Fridays throughout the season following the debut weekend.

Tigers fans online are split with the new look. The new jersey design is receiving mostly thumbs up for the fresh colors and easy-on-the-eye pattern. But the hats, which are black and say "Detroit" in white, are one of the main critiques, plus the nod to the Motor City wasn't a universal slam dunk. And of course, some disagree with altering the traditional look of the Tigers in any way.
