BREAKOUT SEASON: Lucas Raymond building his value with Detroit Red Wings: 'He's our game decider'

Game notes: Well, that was fun. How about we do it again? For the second time in two days, the Red Wings will take on the Montreal Canadiens after the Wings' epic comeback victory Monday night to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Due to some poor bounces and some subpar defense, the Wings found themselves down 4-1 to the Canadiens in the second period, needing at least a tie to keep their playoff dreams alive. Moments after the Habs took a three-goal lead, J.T. Compher responded with a goal to get the Wings within two before the start of the third period.

Then in the third period, Alex DeBrincat scored on a snipe into the top right corner to get the Wings within one goal. As the clock kept ticking, the Wings seemingly just couldn't get the equalizer into the back of the net, with some insane chances somehow not going in. That was until breakout star Lucas Raymond caught the puck near the goalline and fired a shot into the right side of the net to tie things up. In overtime, Raymond was the hero again, finishing off a beautiful pass from Larkin to seal a Wings victory.

Unfortunately for the Wings, the results outside of Detroit did not go their way. To improve their standing, the Wings needed losses from the Washington Capitals, Pittsburgh Penguins, and the New York Islanders, however, all three teams got a win. That means it will all come down to Game 82 to determine the Wings' postseason fate.

In order to reach the postseason for the first time since 2016, the Wings need to gain just one point on the Washington Capitals.

If the Capitals lose in regulation, the Wings need just a tie or a win. If the Caps lose in overtime, the Wings would need a win and two points to pass them. And if the Capitals pull out a win – either in regulation or overtime – the Wings will be eliminated from the playoffs. If both the Wings and Capitals lose, the Penguins could pass them with points in their final game. If the Wings finish in a tie with either team, they do not have the tiebreaker.

Tuesday's game will be the fourth time the squads have played this year, with the Wings losing the first game, 3-2, and then beating the Canadiens 5-4 in the rematch on Dec. 3. Over the last five years, the Wings have had some decent success against the Habs. Since the start of the 2018-19 season, the Wings are 9-6-2 against Montreal, and that was after losing all four games during the 2019 season.
