Ahead of last home regular-season game, Detroit Red Wings laud fan base: 'Awesome'

As the regular season comes to an end on the road, the Detroit Red Wings reflected on what a phenomenal and fun experience their improved squad has had at Little Caesars Arena.

"It's been special, for sure," third-year player Moritz Seider said ahead of Monday's final home regular-season game. "The progress that we've been getting in the last couple months here, it's been tremendous and it's a big credit to the fans to show up every single night.

"It's definitely a big difference from when I started compared to right now."

NOW OR NEVER: Here's what Red Wings' lineup looks like for last home game with playoffs at stake

One of the funnest times came in January, when Wings fans were so enthralled by the NFL's Detroit Lions' playoff run that "Ja-red Goff" chants were heard at LCA.

"We definitely heard it," Seider said. "I thought it was pretty funny. It shows how much excitement there is in this city, especially for sports. They've been all waiting for good old glory days with the city of Detroit. We're just getting a little step closer to heading in the right direction. We want to be an important organization in the NHL for a long time, especially in the upcoming years."

Veteran Jeff Petry said that, "when the Lions were going on that run, the energy around the city transferred into the building here. It's something that we noticed, that we could kind of build off of.

"When we''ve had success at home, we were able to get that building rocking and get that good feeling in here."

David Perron, who is in his second year with the Wings, laughed as he spoke about what it was like for home games in January. "That was great," he said, "and then it kept going a little too long, I think.

"We obviously have been really proud to see what the Lions did, too, it was fun to be part of that. The fans have been awesome for us."

The Wings took a 22-15-5 home record into Monday's game against the Montreal Canadiens.

"The atmosphere has been remarkable for the two years I've been here," coach Derek Lalonde said. "I referenced last year when we didn't quite have the same team after the deadline, and we still had energetic crowds, we still found ways to win down the stretch.

"This is new territory for our fans, too, to be involved this late in these meaningful games. They've certainly shown up."

Patrick Kane, who made his debut at LCA on Dec. 7, harkened back to the days of Joe Louis Arena, where he played as a member of the Chicago Blackhawks.

"The Joe was one of my favorite places to play as a road opponent," Kane said. "Coming in here, at the LCA, and being on this side of it and it being your home rink, I think it's a special place to play. I love playing here. The fans have been great. The atmosphere is awesome."
