Memphis Grizzlies running out of options as Desmond Bane also injured in loss to Clippers

Memphis Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins' lineup options are running thin.

Late in the third quarter, as the Grizzlies attempted to make a comeback against the Western Conference championship-contending Los Angeles Clippers, Jaren Jackson Jr. shared the floor with three teammates who played in summer league and another who was expected to do the same. Jackson had attempted nine more shots than any other Grizzlies player after three quarters as he attempted to will the team back into the game.

The talented Clippers defense loaded its attention toward Jackson and pulled away in a 128-119 win. That ended the Grizzlies' three-game winning streak.

Paul George led the Clippers (25-13) with 37 points. Jackson paced the Grizzlies with 21 points. Memphis (14-24) had seven players finish in double figures.

Here are some takeaways from the game.

Desmond Bane joins long list of injured Grizzlies

Desmond Bane prides himself on pain tolerance. After turning his ankle when he stepped on the foot of a Clippers player while driving to the basket in the third quarter, he debated staying in the game as he attempted to walk off the injury. After limping toward the court and then turning to the bench, Bane decided to come out of the game.

Because he was assigned to shoot the free throws, leaving the game meant he was unable to return. He finished with 15 points on 3-for-11 shooting.

Desmond Bane and Jaren Jackson Jr. rarely share the floor

Memphis had found a groove in lineups where Jackson and Bane shared the floor. With the latest wave of injuries, it's becoming harder for the Grizzlies to do that. Marcus Smart and Ja Morant would often share the floor with members of the second unit. Now that they're both out with injuries, Bane and Jackson must split their minutes. Even if Bane doesn't miss much time, this will continue to be a tough hurdle for the Grizzlies.

First game without Bismack Biyombo

Bismack Biyombo was let go to make room for the Grizzlies to sign Vince Williams Jr. As a result, they don't have many healthy options at center. Santi Aldama missed the game on, so Jackson and Xavier Tillman Sr. played all of the minutes at center.

Tillman was effective on offense and had several highlight defensive plays while often guarding Kawhi Leonard. He finished with 20 points, nine rebounds and two blocks. His points total tied a career high.

What's next

The Grizzlies have a short turnaround with a 7 p.m. Saturday game against the New York Knicks, then against the Golden State Warriors at 5 p.m. Monday in the Martin Luther King Jr. Day game. Both are at FedExForum. All eyes will be on Bane's playing status.
