Memphis Grizzlies sign Vince Williams Jr. to a new contract, waive Bismack Biyombo

The Memphis Grizzlies have signed guard Vince Williams Jr. to a standard contract, the team announced on Wednesday. In a corresponding move, Bismack Biyombo was waived after 30 games with the Grizzlies this season.

The new deal is expected to be a three-year deal worth $7.9 million, according to ESPN.

The 6-foot-4 Williams entered the season on a two-way contract with little expectations. Injuries afforded him an opportunity in the rotation. His defense, rebounding and 3-point shooting have helped the Grizzlies turn their season around after an 0-8 start.

Williams is averaging 5.9 points, 5.1 rebounds and shooting 35.1% on 3-pointers. The Grizzlies have asked him to guard some of the NBA's top players since his ascension into the rotation.

Biyombo was signed as a free agent after the Grizzlies' fifth game of the season by using a suspension exemption the team was granted during Ja Morant's 25-game absence. When Morant returned, the Grizzlies released Kenneth Lofton Jr. and held onto Biyombo.

Biyombo made 27 starts and averaged 5.2 points and 4.5 rebounds.

Xavier Tillman Sr. is expected to fill in at center, with Jaren Jackson Jr. and Santi Aldama also capable of playing minutes. Brandon Clarke is also on the roster, and he could potentially return later this season from a torn achilles suffered last March.

With Williams now on a standard contract, the Grizzlies also have an open two-way slot that can be used to provide frontcourt depth.
