Guardians vs. Tigers score, highlights | Cleveland wins Game 1 behind pitching, big 1st

CLEVELAND — The MLB playoffs are here, and the No. 2-seeded Guardians were ready for them.

First-year manager Stephen Vogt and the Guardians opened the postseason with a 7-0 win over the No. 6 Detroit Tigers in Game 1 of the American League Division Series Saturday afternoon at Progressive Field.

The Tigers, who used the "chaos" of bullpen games to take out No. 3 Houston in their wild card series, didn't have the same success against the Guardians in an AL Central matchup with a trip to the ALCS on the line in the best-of-five series. After a six-day break, the Guardians showed no signs of rust to begin their postseason experience.

Here's how Game 1 unfolded through our live score updates and analysis

Guardians win today: Emmanuel Clase closes out Game 1

Emmanuel Clase entered with a seven-run lead, which wasn't too anxiety-inducing for the Guardians, and Cleveland has won Game 1 of the ALDS 7-0 over the Tigers.

The Guardians allowed only four hits.

Game 2 is set for 4:08 p.m. ET Monday afternoon.

Hunter Gaddis induces double play to end eighth inning

The Tigers finally were able to get a runner on base against the Guardians bullpen, but Hunter Gaddis induced an inning-ending 4-6-3 doubleplay to end it.

The Guardians will carry their 7-0 lead into the bottom of the eighth.

Tim Herrin entering the game for Guardians

Tim Herrin is coming on to pitch the seventh inning for Cleveland, now up 7-0.

The Browns lead the Lions 7-0.

With two on, David Fry roped a double down the left-field line that scored two runs, including Steven Kwan from first base, to give the Guardians a 7-0 lead.

Cleveland is cruising.

Cade Smith strikes out four consecutive hitters; Guardians-Tigers ALDS Game 1 update

Cade Smith had arguably the most underrated season for any reliever in 2024. He has retired all four hitters he's faced today to finish the both the fifth and sixth innings — but he's also struck out all four of those hitters.

In other words, Smith has been just about untouchable today.

Andres Gimenez grounds out to end the fifth inning; Guardians lead the Tigers in ALDS Game 1

Andres Gimenez has already reached twice today, but he grounded out to end the fifth inning. The Guardians lineup hasn't been able to extend their lead any further since their five-run first inning.

It's now up to the Guardians' league-best bullpen to protect the lead.

Guardians-Tigers update: Tanner Bibee done in the fifth inning

Tanner Bibee's day is done. With two outs in the fifth, Parker Meadows singled to right-center field. And with the heart of the Tigers lineup coming up, the Guardians are going to the bullpen.

As Bibee walked off the mound, the crowd gave him a very loud ovation. Bibee then started motioning for even more noise, screaming "Let's go!"

Bibee threw 76 pitches and struck out six. He gave the Guardians exactly what they needed. With the off day tomorrow, the bullpen can be unloaded.

Cade Smith is entering the game to face Carpenter.

Tanner Bibee worked into and then out of trouble in the fourth inning.

Riley Greene singled and Colt Keith walked to put two runners on with nobody out. Bibee then induced a big 5-4-3 doubleplay off the bat of Spencer Torkelson. He then got a groundout to end the inning with the Guardians still leading 5-0.

Guardians-Tigers score: Tanner Bibee strikes out Jake Rogers to end second inning

Tanner Bibee had to labor a bit (again), and the Tigers (again) put a runner in scoring position, but Bibee (again) escaped unharmed. With two outs, he struck out Jake Rogers to end the inning. Bibee yelled as he walked off the mound.

One time through the Tigers' order, and Bibee is at 44 pitches. He probably has a maximum of nine batters left.

Guardians outfielder Lane Thomas (8) celebrates with Josh Naylor (22) and Jose Ramirez (11) after hitting a three-run home run against the Tigers in the first inning in Game 1 of the ALDS, Oct. 5, 2024, in Cleveland.

Guardians have a 5-run first inning in ALDS Game 1; Lane Thomas crushes three-run home run

The Guardians have had a perfect start to the playoffs.

The very first pitch from Reese Olson was crushed for a three-run home run off the bat of Lane Thomas. The Tigers went to the bullpen in part to ensure Thomas wouldn't face the lefty, but it didn't matter. One pitch, three runs, and the Guardians have a five-run inning before they have recorded an out.

Progressive Field is going absolutely nuts. The Guardians just became the first American League team to ever score five runs before recording an out in a playoff game.

Josh Naylor RBI single extends Guardians lead

The Guardians have a 2-0 lead, two runners on and still nobody out.

With the infield drawn in, Josh Naylor made pretty weak contact on a ground ball to the right side, but it was in the right spot, and the Guardians have a 2-0 lead with runners on the corners.

The first four batters reached base, and the Tigers are going to the bullpen without Tyler Holton recording an out. Reese Olson is entering the game. Very quickly, the Tigers have their backs against the wall.

Guardians take lead in Game 1 of ALDS against Tigers

The Guardians have the lead in Game 1.

After Kwan's double, David Fry drew a walk to bring up Jose Ramirez, who grounded a ball down the third-base line. That bell went right through the legs of Zach McKinstry at third base, and Kwan scored easily.

The Guardians have a 1-0 lead in the first inning, two runners in scoring position and nobody out.

Steven Kwan opens first inning with a double off the right-field wall; Guardians-Tigers ALDS Game 1 update

Steven Kwan took the second pitch he saw and drove it off the top of the right-field wall for a leadoff double in the first inning. One batter into the game, and the Guardians have a scoring chance going.

David Fry and Jose Ramirez are up next to face the lefty Holton.

Guardians-Tigers ALDS Game 1 score: Tanner Bibee labors through first inning

Tanner Bibee struggled to finish off that first inning, allowing a single and hitting a batter, but he did finally escape it without any damage done. Though, it took him 27 pitches to get through the first inning.

And now the Guardians take their first swings against the Tigers' "pitching chaos" approach, with Tyler Holton opening for the Tigers.
