Cleveland Guardians roster announced for ALDS to start MLB playoffs vs Detroit Tigers

CLEVELAND — The roster is set.

After debating numerous tough decisions around the roster, the Guardians have chosen the 26 players they'll take with them into the American League Division Series, which starts with Game 1 Saturday against the Detroit Tigers.

Teams can select a different 26-man roster before each series.

Cleveland Guardians 2024 ALDS roster vs. Detroit Tigers

Catchers: Bo Naylor, Austin Hedges

No surprises here.

Infielders: Jose Ramirez, Josh Naylor, Andres Gimenez, Brayan Rocchio, David Fry, Daniel Schneemann, Kyle Manzardo

Angel Martinez is the lone surprise on the position player side. The Guardians are carrying Daniel Schneemann and Tyler Freeman as utility players. Manager Stephen Vogt noted that Freeman had looked good in Triple-A to end the year and then had some good at-bats, after making some adjustments, over the last week in Cleveland.

Outfielders: Steven Kwan, Lane Thomas, Will Brennan, Jhonkensy Noel, Tyler Freeman

Jhonkensy Noel makes the roster over Myles Straw. The Guardians are choosing Noel's potential production at the plate, especially against the Tigers' lefties, over Straw's speed.

Pitchers: Tanner Bibee, Matthew Boyd, Alex Cobb, Emmanuel Clase, Hunter Gaddis, Tim Herrin, Eli Morgan, Cade Smith, Andrew Walters, Erik Dabrowski, Gavin Williams, Joey Cantillo

The Guardians will carry 12 pitchers. Ben Lively, Nick Sandlin and Pedro Avila are the three pitchers who lost out on making it onto the ALDS roster.

Vogt noted these were especially difficult decisions to have Lively, Sandlin and Avila, all of whom played roles in getting the Guardians to this point. But with the Tigers throwing bullpen games, the Guardians opted for an extra position player to give them as much flexibility as possible.
