Buffalo Bills release wide receiver off IR with injury settlement and he can sign with another team

The Buffalo Bills released wide receiver Chase Claypool off injured reserve with an injury settlement. It will give the 26-year-old an opportunity to sign with another team.

Buffalo placed Claypool, who signed a one-year deal with the Bills in the offseason, on IR on Tuesday. He impressed coaches and teammates in OTAs but missed the preseason opener and most of training camp with a toe injury.

Claypool, 26, wasn't likely to make the Bills roster. He was listed on the fourth-string on Buffalo's first depth chart, behind third-stringers Tyrell Shavers, Andy Isabella and Justin Shorter.

The Bills also waived wide receiver Bryan Thompson and signed wide receivers Damiere Byrd and Deon Cain to one-year contracts.

The Bills signed the 6-foot-4, 238-pound Claypool in May as a big-bodied X receiver to perform on a prove-it deal. The Bills were his third team in the last 12 months.

It's another disappointing season for the former second-round pick. Claypool totaled eight receptions for 77 yards and a touchdown in 12 games with the Chicago Bears and Miami Dolphins in 2023.

Claypool had a stellar rookie season in 2020 with the Pittsburgh Steelers, becoming one of Ben Roethlisberger's favorite targets. He had 62 catches for 873 yards and led all rookies with nine touchdown receptions in a draft class that included Justin Jefferson, CeeDee Lamb, Tee Higgins, Brandon Aiyuk, Michael Pittman Jr. and Jerry Jeudy. Claypool's numbers dipped slightly in his sophomore season and he was shipped from Pittsburgh to Chicago midway through 2022. The relationship between Claypool and the organization fizzled early into 2023 and he was traded to Miami.
