A.J. Puk trade grades: Did Arizona Diamondbacks win deal with Miami Marlins?
The Arizona Republic: Diamondbacks trade for Marlins reliever A.J. Puk
Nick Piecoro writes: "The Diamondbacks have acquired left-hander A.J. Puk in exchange for a pair of prospects, a source confirmed, a deal that gives the club another power-armed reliever that can slot into the bullpen in a late-inning role. Puk, 29, has a 4.30 ERA in 44 innings, but those numbers are skewed by his struggles from early in the season when he was pitching in the rotation. Since moving back to the bullpen – and back into a role in which he has pitched well over the past two seasons – he owns a 2.08 ERA with six walks and 33 strikeouts in 30 1/3 innings."
MLB trade rumors: What other moves could Diamondbacks make at 2024 MLB trade deadline?
Anthony Franco writes: The D-Backs could look into adding a starting pitcher and/or an offensive upgrade before Tuesday, though a high-leverage reliever has seemed their priority for weeks.

CBS Sports: A.J. Puk trade shows that Diamondbacks are buyers at MLB trade deadline
Dayn Perry writes: "The D-backs were presumed to be on the border between buyer and seller heading toward the July 30 trade deadline. The Puk trade, however, clearly signals that they intend to fortify the roster for another playoff push. The reigning National League champions have little hope of catching the Dodgers in the NL West. However, the NL wild-card race features many teams and a great deal of compression in the standings. Arizona presently has a 53-50 record and are one game behind the Padres for the third and final wild-card spot in the NL. Presently, the National League features nine teams in playoff position or within 5 1/2 games of the final wild-card berth."
MLB.com: Diamondbacks should be all-in at 2024 MLB trade deadline
Anthony Castrovince writes: "In the muddled mess that is the NL Wild Card picture, it’s hard to know which clubs should be pushing their chips to the middle of the table. But we’re singling out the D-backs in that group because of the heavy lifting they already did in the wake of their run to the NL pennant last year. They took a franchise-record payroll into what has been a disappointing 2024 to date. But the possibility for improved health and performance for the rotation in the second half makes the D-backs dangerous."

The Athletic: Diamondbacks potential landing spot for Cody Bellinger
It wrote: “One of the sport’s toughest evaluations is thus one of its toughest trade targets: Which version of Cody Bellinger do you most believe in? How healthy will he be following a broken finger? Just how many games of Bellinger might you be trading for? All those factors, combined with the Cubs’ still-beating chances in the NL, conspire against a deal involving the one-time MVP. Desperate teams, however, have made crazier moves. Potential landing spots: Diamondbacks, (Atlanta) Braves, and (Seattle) Mariners.”
Burn City Sports: Reid Detmers a buy-low candidate for Diamondbacks at trade deadline
Michael McDermott writes: "While starting pitching isn’t a pressing need, one starter that could suit their fancy that’s become available is left-hander Reid Detmers. In the 2024 season, Detmers is 3-6 with a 6.14 ERA. Advanced metrics are more bullish about his run prevention skill, with a 4.36 FIP, 4.07 xFIP, and 3.64 xERA. Looking at those three numbers, his issue isn’t necessarily reflective of his ability to miss bats, limit free passes and long balls, or even quality of contact."

The Arizona Republic: Diamondbacks 'looking to add' at 2024 MLB trade deadline
Nick Piecoro writes: "When the month began, the Diamondbacks’ direction was uncertain. They were languishing below .500. They had a tough stretch of schedule ahead of them. There was a chance they could find themselves buried amidst a slew of contenders in the National League wild-card race. But Hazen seems to have some confidence about the way things are trending."
PHNX Sports: Bullpen clear priority for DBacks at MLB trade deadline
Jesse Friedman writes: "Hazen said that the Diamondbacks do not have a preference between a right-handed or left-handed reliever. That may come as a surprise given that Joe Mantiply is currently the only lefty on the roster. Hazen said that he is not too concerned about that, however. All four of the club’s primary high-leverage relievers this year, including Sewald, Kevin Ginkel, Ryan Thompson, and Justin Martinez have put up better numbers against lefties than righties."

MLB.com: Diamondbacks need to be buyers at 2024 MLB trade deadline
Steve Gilbert writes: "It’s hard to imagine a scenario in which GM Mike Hazen is not aggressive at the Trade Deadline. For one, it’s not in his nature to be a seller. Secondly, the team opened the year with the highest payroll in franchise history. And as the D-backs showed with last year’s run to the World Series as the third Wild Card team, all you have to do is get into the postseason and anything can happen. With the NL Wild Card race wide open, look for Hazen to be a buyer. Depending on how they feel about how quickly their injured starters will return, the D-backs could look to add a starting pitcher, but they will most certainly try to add to their bullpen, something Hazen has tried to do every year. Another bat might also be a target depending on how third baseman Eugenio Suárez is hitting."
The Arizona Republic: Where might the DBacks see a need as trade deadline approaches?
Nick Piecoro writes: "More than likely, the Arizona Diamondbacks’ recent hot streak has removed any directional uncertainty from their trade deadline approach. … the Diamondbacks … look like buyers. Maybe not super-aggressive, all-in buyers, but certainly a club that will look to add. Of course, that could still change … but it feels like GM Mike Hazen’s course is more or less settled. What seems less clear, however, is whether he will need to add starting pitching. That question might be one Hazen considers up until the final day, while gathering information both on the field and behind the scenes."
Diamondbacks' 2024 MLB Draft reviews: DBacks' picks near top of rankings
MLB.com: Who could DBacks land at 2024 MLB trade deadline?
Anthony Castrovince writes: "Arizona was aggressive in pursuit of bullpen help last year with the addition of closer Paul Sewald, and it would not be a surprise to see the Snakes active in that area again. Carlos Estévez, Tanner Scott, Michael Kopech and Pete Fairbanks are some of the more notable names that could be available."
Burn City Sports: Diamondbacks face dilemma with starting pitching at trade deadline
Michael McDermott writes: "The Diamondbacks are stuck between a rock and a hard place with what they can do with their starting rotation, with either choice having the potential to backfire if they miss the playoffs. Either they didn’t do enough to shore up the rotation or they gave up a significant prospect haul to not improve their season situation. It will be interesting to see what Hazen does in the final week leading up to the deadline."
YardBarker: Diamondbacks could use help in bullpen at MLB trade deadline
Jacob Hardin writes: "According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, the D-backs are particularly focused on a left-handed reliever to bolster their bullpen. Last year at the deadline, the Diamondbacks elected to grab closer Paul Sewald from the Seattle Mariners. Sewald ultimately made a massive impact in Arizona’s run to the World Series."
The Athletic: Diamondbacks will trade Eugenio Suarez at 2024 MLB trade deadline
Sam Blum writes: "The Diamondbacks made a push in the offseason to improve on the World Series roster of 2023. It hasn’t gone according to plan, but they came out of the break just one game out of the wild card. The Eugenio Suárez acquisition hasn’t worked out, and while the D-Backs should be buyers, Suárez might not be in the plans. Arizona should still look for pitching help and make a push for the postseason."

Sports Illustrated: What infielders could Diamondbacks trade for at 2024 MLB trade deadline?
Aaron Hughes writes: "The 2024 Trade Deadline is approaching fast, and with the Arizona Diamondbacks setting themselves up to be buyers, I compiled a list of infielders that might fit the teams bill. It was not long ago that an infielder, more specifically a third baseman would have been at the top of Mike Hazen's mid-summer shopping list."
Sports Illustrated: Diamondbacks could add power bat at MLB trade deadline
Jake Oliver writes: "The Arizona Diamondbacks are likely buyers at the MLB Trade Deadline on July 30th at 3 PM local AZ time. Beyond needing a potential starting pitcher and a guaranteed left-handed reliever, there's a chance that Hazen might be looking for power-hitting bat. There aren't many available so it would likely be a steep cost, but it could be worth it as it would give Manager Torey Lovullo yet another game changing player that he could shuffle around in the outfield and at DH, especially against left-handed pitching as Randal Grichuk has yet to provide the power."
Clutch Points: Diamondbacks looking to buy ahead of MLB trade deadline
Sam DiGiovanni writes: "The Diamondbacks have plenty of options up and down the roster but may have to make some tough decisions on whether those options can be trusted down the home stretch of the season. On top of adding some more relief pitchers, how much more room do they have for additions? Not much. Merrill Kelly and Eduardo Rodriguez are essentially having lost seasons as Jordan Montgomery joins them on the injured list. Zac Gallen, who previously dealt with an injury himself, has had very little support behind him in the rotation. But how many outside options, if any, can Arizona bring in after making two big moves in free agency to support its three starters that got them to the World Series?"
MLB.com: Who would Diamondbacks have to give up in 2024 MLB trade deadline deal?
Anthony Castrovince writes: "If it’s a major, major move, Brandon Pfaadt is a player of interest around the league, and shortstops Jordan Lawlar and Tommy Troy and outfielder Druw Jones are Top 100 prospects. If it’s a lesser deal, slugging corner infielder Deyvison De Los Santos is an interesting chip, given that the D-backs made him available in the Rule 5 Draft before he broke out at the Double-A and Triple-A levels this year."
MLB power rankings: Arizona Diamondbacks make move
The Athletic: New York Yankees potential landing spot for Christian Walker
"Few players in the game have been as overlooked in the last few years as Christian Walker, who ranks fourth in WAR at first base dating to 2020. He brings power at the plate and a slick glove at first. He's a guy who can help deepen the middle of most any order from the right side. Like more than half of the National League, the Diamondbacks currently straddle the buy/sell line. Potential landing spots: Houston Astros, Milwaukee Brewers, (and) New York Yankees."
Sports Illustrated: Diamondbacks must get left-handed reliever at 2024 MLB trade deadline
Jack Sommers writes: "One area of need that might be almost equally as important is left-handed relief help. The D-backs only have one lefty in the bullpen, Joe Mantiply. They lost Kyle Nelson for the year due to Thoracic Outlet surgery and Andrew Saalfrank was suspended for a year due to violation of the league's gambling policies. ... Thus the D-backs find themselves in a position where they will need to add a left-hand reliever at the deadline if they wish to survive the rest of the regular season and be equipped to handle the better lineups in the postseason. Simply relying on just one lefty in the bullpen is not a formula for postseason success."

PHNX Sports: Is third base still a need for Diamondbacks ahead of trade deadline?
Jesse Friedman writes: "On June 11, Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suárez had a .575 OPS in 262 plate appearances. The club opted to give rookie Blaze Alexander more looks at third; it appeared that Suárez was running out of time. Since then, Alexander has been demoted to Triple-A Reno, and Suárez has slashed .255/.376/.500. In light of Suárez’s recent surge, the Diamondbacks do not appear to be in dire need of infield help. Nonetheless, Hazen said that he will look to improve any platoon situations that he can. He said that he is more so looking for left-handed hitters than right-handed, although he expects left-handed hitters to be difficult to find."
Sports Illustrated: Jordan Montgomery key to Diamondbacks' trade deadline approach
Jack Sommers writes: "How well Montgomery pitches in that first game could loom quite large in determining Hazen's urgency and willingness to spend big for a starting pitcher. If Montgomery looks sharp, it will lessen the urgency. If he is still pitching poorly, then the urgency could be ratcheted up considerably. Merrill Kelly and Eduardo Rodriguez will not be back until at least a week or two beyond the trade deadline, if not longer. So Hazen will not have the luxury of evaluation there. Therefore secondary to the overall wins and losses on the road trip, keep your eyes on Jordan Montgomery. His performance could be key to the D-backs' trade deadline approach."

Fansided: Mariners should trade for Diamondbacks' Paul Sewald
Jeffrey Nooney writes: "The Mariners have dealt with their fair share of injuries. Gregory Santos missed half of the year, Gabe Speier is back out of the All-Star break, and Andres Munoz has been dealing with an off and on issue with his back. Ryan Stanek has also dealt with some back issues. When healthy, the Mariners bullpen is one of the best. Maybe it is time to spend some resources to make this bullpen even better by making a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks for their closer, Paul Sewald. Ever heard of him?"
Clutch Points: 2024 MLB trade deadline targets for Diamondbacks to consider include Justin Turner
Russell Steinberg writes: "There's not much out there in terms of lower-cost infielders that the Diamondbacks could pursue. Justin Turner, however, could be worth a gamble. His numbers aren't great — a .228 batting average and 91 OPS+ — but when you consider what the Diamondbacks are getting from the left side of their infield, he's not the worst option at third base or as a guy who could give Walker or Marte a day off. It's hard to gauge what Turner's upside still is in his age-39 season. He did, however, hit .276 with 23 home runs last year for the Red Sox."
PHNX Sports: What would DBacks have to give up in a deal at 2024 MLB trade deadline?
Jesse Friedman writes: "The addition of a third wild card spot in 2022 made it easier to make the MLB postseason. That means that more teams are in contention around the deadline, and fewer teams are looking to sell off pieces in exchange for lower-level prospects. Hazen said that he expects potential trade partners to ask for upper-level, major-league-ready talent, but that he would prefer to trade prospects if he can."
