Diamondbacks land reliever A.J. Puk in deal with Marlins
The Diamondbacks have acquired left-hander A.J. Puk in exchange for a pair of prospects, a source confirmed, a deal that gives the club another power-armed reliever that can slot into the bullpen in a late-inning role.
Puk, 29, has a 4.30 ERA in 44 innings, but those numbers are skewed by his struggles from early in the season when he was pitching in the rotation. Since moving back to the bullpen – and back into a role in which he has pitched well over the past two seasons – he owns a 2.08 ERA with six walks and 33 strikeouts in 30 1/3 innings.
Puk comes with an addition two seasons of club control beyond this year, and the Diamondbacks could be viewing him as a potential heir apparent to the closer’s role with Paul Sewald set to hit free agency at the end of the year.
The Diamondbacks are parting with corner Triple-A slugger Deyvison De Los Santos and Double-A center fielder Andrew Pintar.
De Los Santos, a first baseman, is having a monster year, hitting .325/.376/.635 with 28 homers in 342 at-bats, but his viability as a big league masher is uncertain due to his lack of a refined approach at the plate. He is also considered a poor defender at first base, where he moved after struggling at third base.
Pintar, 23, hit well in High-A Hillsboro (.304/.403/.516) in what has been his first fully healthy season as a pro, but he has struggled in a 10-game stretch since a promotion to Double-A. He is an athletic, speedy player whom scouts believe has a chance to hit in the majors.
Puk will give the Diamondbacks another strong, late-game option in the bullpen, where he will join Sewald and relievers Ryan Thompson, Kevin Ginkel and Justin Martinez. He gives the club another lefty to go along with Joe Mantiply.
