49ers starters struggle, reserves shine in preseason victory over Saints
The San Francisco 49ers got in the win column in their second week of the preseason. They knocked off the New Orleans Saints 16-10 at Levi's Stadium.
Some starters suited up for the 49ers, including quarterback Brock Purdy. Purdy and the first-team offense that did play had a rough go in their couple of series. Overall San Francisco looked much better in Week 2 of the preseason than they did in Week 1.
Here are observations from each quarter:
First quarter
- Good start to the game for undrafted rookie running back Cody Schrader. He returned the opening kickoff out to the 31, and then took his first carry five yards.
- Brock Purdy is starting under center and his first throw is a check down to tight end Brayden Willis. He looked extremely well-composed in the pocket.
- Speaking of Willis, he lined up at fullback on the second snap of the game.
- Yikes, man. Left guard Nick Zakelj and left tackle Jaylon Moore nearly got Purdy killed. Zakelj looked like he tried to shove a Saints defensive lineman upfield and instead shoved him into Moore, who was occupied. The lineman who beat Zakelj got home for a hit on Purdy as he was throwing on third-and-long.
- Good stop in the open field by George Odum and De'Vondre Campbell on a third-and-short. Looked like good communication from Campbell and fellow LB Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles to keep everything bottled up in the second level.
- Scary throw by Purdy way back across the field after rolling left. Hopefully that's just a preseason throw, because tossing that pass into double coverage is a good way to give the ball away. TE Eric Saubert had to wrestle it away from a Saints defensive back.
- What a mess this version of the 49ers' offense is. There's no reason for Purdy to stay in the game for a third series.
- Mark Sanchez is saying "naked" a lot, per my mother in law.
- Nice tackle on a second-down run by Ji'Ayir Brown. He was in the box to start the snap and flew in for a tackle-for-loss to set up third-and-long.
- Now a pass breakup by rookie cornerback Renardo Green on third down. He was in the slot on that snap and got a hand in to help force an incompletion and a punt.
- First touch of rookie wide receiver Jacob Cowing's career comes on a punt return. He snuck out a couple yards before being tripped up out of bounds.
- Bad incompletion on a third-and-long when Purdy tried to find WR Trent Taylor. It looked like Taylor got punked on the route and couldn't get enough depth.
- Malik Mustapha got wiped out by a Taysom Hill lead block. Not great for the rookie safety.
- Good tackle by Curtis Robinson, who lined up as the Sam LB. He got into the backfield to drop the RB for a loss of three.
- There's Mustapha with a big hit on a checkdown. He read that Saints QB Derek Carr was in trouble and got downhill quickly to level the receiver.
Second quarter
- Sheesh. 16-play touchdown drive for the Saints.
- Josh Dobbs is the first quarterback off the bench for Purdy.
- Dobbs to Cowing for 10 yards and a first down. That's good to see for both the QB and the young WR. Dobbs followed that with a 10-yard strike to Trent Taylor over the middle. Good start for him.
- Another nice throw on a designed rollout. Dobbs hit TE Cameron Latu by floating a nice ball over the top of a defensive lineman who read the boot action.
- Jake Moody drilled a 47-yard field goal. That's good to see.
- Woof. CB Darrell Luter Jr. got shaken out of his shoes on a handoff that got strung out to the edge.
- Wow what a play by DL Alex Barrett. He got QB Spencer Rattler wrapped up, then tore the ball out, and then recovered it for a turnover.
- Drop from Ronnie Bell. That's brutal. He has not had a good preseason. He's lucky that ball wasn't ruled a fumble.
- Now a drop by Cameron Latu. He's not getting himself any closer to a roster spot.
- Dobbs' scrambling ability may be what separates him from Brandon Allen in the backup QB battle.
- Another short Moody field goal. Good preseason work for the second-year kicker.
- Woof. Underthrow from Dobbs to WR Danny Gray. Then he underthrew Gray on a deep shot where Gray had a step.
- There's a strike on a deep ball to Cowing. What a game for the rookie receiver and a really nice throw from Dobbs. Cowing had to haul it in through good coverage. That's an impressive play all around.
- Another drop this time by Taylor in the end zone on a third-and-goal. That's so tough. It was a little high, but that's one Taylor has to have.
- The 49ers go for it on fourth-and-goal and Dobbs keeps a read option for a touchdown. He made a sweet move to make a defender whiff. That was a fun little stretch for a preseason game and a good way to end the half.
Third quarter
- Good run stop by Robert Beal on the first play of the second half. He flowed down the line to make a hit.
- Woof. LB Jalen Graham got lost in coverage downfield. He was fortunate the tight end couldn't find it.
- The 49ers run defense has done a nice job bottling RBs up in the backfield, but they're allowing them to bounce outside to find room. That's something that can be fixed, especially once starters play.
- Brandon Allen is under center for the 49ers' first drive of the second half.
- End around for Cowing, he takes it for 18 yards and a first down. He's lighting it up.
- Sack for Graham. He has some pass rushing chops that may be necessary with the 49ers pass rush.
- Good deep ball from Allen to Bell, but it just went off Bell's hands. He was in a scramble drill and did well to get open. Allen did a great job hitting his WR in stride. A Saints DB got there just in time to help facilitate an incompletion.
- Moody misses badly from 51 yards out. Yikes.
- Luter should have had an interception on a really poorly thrown ball. It looked like he wasn't expecting the ball to be near him and the ball slipped through his hands.
Fourth quarter
- Good tackle on a third down by CB Samuel Womack. He got downhill and walloped the TE before he could turn upfield.
- A Tanner Mordecai sighting! The undrafted rookie QB completed his first throw to TE Brayden Willis. Then he hit TE Jake Tonges on an out. That's a couple of good tosses for Mordecai in his first preseason action.
- Mordecai tried to let one rip down the field and it came out of his hand a little weird. Gray had to jump to get hands on it, popped it into the air, then grabbed it for a first down.
- Moody bounced back to hit another field goal. That's good to see.
- DL Shakel Brown broke in to hit the RB in the backfield, but he let him get away. Rookie LB Tatum Bethune flew in to clean the play up for a TFL. Bethune has had a couple of nice preseason showings.
- Luter got beat on a fourth-and-5 that would have ostensibly ended the game.
- Whew. Luter got some payback on a second-and-15 where he flew into the flat and walloped the receiver to force an incompletion. Nice play by the second-year CB.
- Now Luter forces an incompletion on a fourth-and-long. Really well done by him to bounce back after allowing the previous fourth-down completion.
Final score
49ers 16, Saints 10
