The world's first range of specially designed luxury lingerie for transgender women has dropped
The world’s first range of specially designed luxury lingerie for transgender women has arrived.
Until now trans women who haven’t had surgery have had few options when it comes to lingerie that will conceal their genitals. But Carmen Liu, a trans woman, has set out to change that with the GI Collection.
The more traditional wear currently available, which Carmen describes as the “love child of Borat’s mankini and a jock strap”, is made from a cheap swimwear-like material that is heavily elasticated.
And it’s an entire world away from anything found on the shelves in Victoria’s Secret stores.
Not being able to feel sexy in their underwear can stop transgender women feeling like the women they are and Carmen, 27, says all women deserve the experience of wearing sexy lingerie.
Carmen’s range includes a unique series of products that ‘tucks’ the genitals in while featuring pretty bows and lace trimmings usually found on conventional lingerie.
She is also adding bras to the range to match her innovative bottoms, which keeps the area down below looking flat with a secret combination of design and fabric.
As well as underwear, the range will also include a lingerie ‘tucking tape’ – which is safe for skin and a less painful alternative to household tapes that many trans women use.
The tape can be used on its own or in conjunction with the underwear to help trans women feel “more secure”.
Despite taking steps forward in the strive for equality for transgender people, Carmen says that trans women have been made to feel undesirable by many mainstream lingerie brands.
Last year the chief marketing officer of Victoria’s Secret was forced to apologise over controversial comments he made regarding transgender models.
In an interview with American Vogue, Edward Razek claimed the lingerie brand’s annual runway shows are “a fantasy” therefore should not include transgender models.
And it’s exactly this mindset that Carmen Liu Lingerie is hoping to change.
“I hope that the collection will allow transgender women to feel feminine, sexy and accepted in society,” Carmen says.
“We need this brand not only because lingerie for trans women does not exist, but to also help us have a greater experience as the women we were suppose to be.”
The launch comes as back in December Miss Spain, Angela Ponce, made history as the first transgender contestant at the Miss Universe pageant on Sunday night.
Several well known fashion houses, including Calvin Klein, Prabal Gurung, Marc Jacobs and Helmut Lang have featured transgender models on their catwalks in recent years.
