World Earth Day is one day of the year specifically dedicated to showing our support for protecting the environment.
World Earth Day was first celebrated in 1970, with a focus on climate change.
The fashion and beauty industry has started to see a shift in buyers making more conscious shopping choices, as well as brands dropping eco-friendly ranges, in an attempt to make a positive impact on the planet.
Some labels have made changes to various parts of the process, such as the sourcing of materials and manufacturing of garments, to help to reduce the impact on the environment.
Others offer a recycle service, where you can trade in your old clothes in return for a discount on your next item.
There are also initiatives set up by rental companies, such as Hurr, Cocoon Club and Endless Wardrobe, which allow you to borrow designer clothes and accessories when you sign up to their subscription, in a bid to reduce the amount of items that end up in landfill.
Ethical brands have grown in popularity – while some brands strive to be eco-friendly, other labels have started to introduce “conscious” collections.
Other labels may donate a portion of sales to charities or organisations such as the Tree Plant Project, which sees one tree planted for every item sold.
While there's still a lot of work to be done, thankfully, there's now a wide selection of sustainable high street stores and online retailers to shop at.

Arket has revealed 76% of their ready to wear collection, accessories and homeware were made from sustainably sourced fabrics and textiles in 2020, but they aim to increase this to 100% by 2030.
The label prefer to use cotton, recycled cotton or the fabric sourced through their Better Cotton Initiative to further their goal of being a sustainable and eco-friendly brand.

Away That Day are a UK-based brand set up in 2018, which champions sustainability with its selection of swimwear.
Its bikini and one piece swimsuits are made from a fibre called econyl, derived from pre and post consumer waste, which includes fishing nets and plastic waste that has been cleaned and constructed into chic swimwear.

H&M aim to achieve 100% “climate positivity” by 2040, as the high street retailer aims to use renewable energy during its operations, as well as 100% recycled or sustainable materials by 2030.
In 2011 the company signed a pledge promising to commit to phase out hazardous chemicals in their textile and leather supply chains.
Now the company has a dedicated Conscious collection, which is a huge hit with those looking for eco-friendly purchases.

Mango is championing sustainability, with 79% of the garments made from sustainable materials, which they aim to increase to 100% by 2022.
Mango's Committed range uses environmentally friendly fibres, but they also aim to use recyclable packaging too.

The UK-based jewellery brand is an eco-friendly accessories company, recycling and reusing materials to make their collection.

Missoma is working towards a more sustainable ethos, and this Earth Day it will be offsetting carbon from deliveries using climate tech platform Vaayu, which is the first jewellery brand to champion this.
Plus, Missoma is committed to using 50% of recycled silver by December 2021.

In 2018 Mother of Pearl launched their first sustainable range of core classic pieces under the No Frills collection.
Not only do they stock garments made from natural or organic fibres, made using minimal chemicals, their eco-friendly ethos also filters into their London offices, which are run on green energy and are a plastic free zone.
Mother of Pearl pride themselves on complete transparency for their shoppers, and have acknowledged that while there are some items that use 5% synthetic material, they only use when absolutely necessary and are looking to phase them out.

Sleeper has revealed 90% of their garments are made from 100% natural fibres, which include linen, cotton, and silk, and the textiles are studied and approved by international standards and certificates before use.
