These women will make you want to grow out your armpit hair
Despite being 100% natural, body hair is still a contentious topic.
Women spend hours of their life shaving, waxing and epilating only to have to do it all over again.
Photographer Ben Hopper is trying to change all of that.
His Natural Beauty photo series sees women showing off their fully grown armpit hair.
The photographer recruits women who have been going through the usual body hair removal routine and asks them to grow out their underarm hair.
Surprisingly, many have agreed.
The series began in 2008 and was first published in 2014. Now, it has been re-published alongside quotes from each of the women, spilling wisdom on body hair and beauty.
Ben believes that seeing enough women with body hair will normalise it for the rest of society.
“The motivation was both my own liking of seeing women with armpit hair, and a joke about modern art and contemporary art, how if you repeat something enough it will make an impact,” he told Metro.
He specifically chose women who looked like typical models or actresses in order to challenge our views on beauty even further.
“The culture right now has been designed by celebrities, so if you take someone like Kate Moss and she has armpit hair, a lot of women would start growing their armpit hair,” he commented.
“That was the whole trick in the project – the fact that all the women look like models, and people are not used to seeing them like that. All of a sudden, they have armpit hair, and people are more accepting towards that look. They are more willing to reconsider female body hair.”
Ben says that his next steps would ideally involve hair-loving celebrities such as Madonna and Miley Cyrus.
“The more armpit hair is on display, the less of a big deal it will be. People will just get on with their lives. It’s nothing. It’s not important. It’s just hair,” he finishes.
