Women pose naked with mannequins in powerful protest series
We’re all exhausted from seeing the same old depiction of female beauty. Thin, white and flawless is sadly still the look of the day.
Rather than just complaining about the lack of diversity, Canadian photographer Julia Busato decided to do something. In an incredibly powerful photo series, she captured a variety of women posing naked with a mannequin.
The project, dubbed the ‘Mannequin Series’, aims to illustrate just how women of all ages, sizes and colours have broken the usual beauty barriers. “Beauty should not be defined by a strict set of standards applied to everyone,” Julia told the BBC.
Each woman has an uplifting story to tell whether it’s Katrina who opted for a double mastectomy when diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 28 or diabetes sufferer Taylor who wears an insulin pump on her thigh.
Although the photos have been shared over 200,000 times, Julia has recently been banned from Facebook thanks to a bout of “malicious reporting.”
The photographer won’t let hateful comments stop her and is urging women who wish to take part to get in touch: “The series is being shared all over the world and that brings me so much joy. It lets people know that they aren’t alone and it’s okay to be different than the norm.”
“The positivity is outweighing the negativity and bringing society’s stigmas to the forefront to be faced head on. I just want women to love themselves unconditionally because we are all beautiful in our own way.”
