Woman who was fat-shamed by her doctor drops 10 stone in time for her wedding
A woman who was ‘fat-shamed’ by her doctor has shed an incredible 10 stone in time for her wedding.
Back in 2015, Marine Dessymoulie, 29, from Paris had seen her weight creep up to 22 stone when her doctor made the comments about her body shape.
Asking her if her then-boyfriend “liked her like that” and whether she was “fed up of being fat,” the doctor’s blunt words were enough to kick-start a life-change that would see Marine drop to a slim 12 stone.
“I was always overweight I was a very greedy. My parents always tried to put me on a diet but it didn’t work,” Marine told Mail Online.
Then when she moved in with her boyfriend, Marine says she put on even more weight. “We ate fast food several times a week at McDonald’s or Subway. I didn’t really care about my food. I was already fat, all my life I had been fat,” she says.
Though she didn’t actually keep track of the calories she was eating, Marine knew the amount and type of food she was eating was contributing to her weight gain.
The way she looked and felt started having a real impact on Marine’s life to the point where even walking felt like an ordeal.
“I didn’t wear normal clothes. Every day I would wear the same top and every day the same jeans,” she explained.
“I was eating and isolating myself from others from shame. I didn’t want to be the fat girl, but I was.”
Marine says the turning point for change came when her doctor commented on her weight.
“I was angry, sad and ashamed – a mixture of all possible feelings,” she told Mail Online.
But though the doctor’s negative comments were hurtful, it sparked Marine into action and the very next day she booked an appointment at a nutritionist to begin her health journey.
After ditching the junk food, Marine now eats a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables and home cooked meals. And though she’s already shrunk to 12 stone, her goal is to reach 11 stone for her June 2018 wedding.
Looking back on the incident with her doctor Marine says that though she found it upsetting, she is ultimately grateful that it proved to be a catalyst for change.
“I’ve had negative comments before and I am strong person, so I am now glad of the doctor’s attitude, but maybe another person would have very badly reacted,” she said. “In the end it was good for me.”
