Whoopi Goldberg wants to cure your period pain with weed-infused products
Period pain? Whoopi Goldberg has got your back. The actress recently announced she plans to launch a line of new products containing marijuana, which claim to help ease menstrual cramps.
As any women who suffers from crippling cramps every month will understand, period pain is no joke. Whoopi Goldberg certainly doesn’t think so, which is why she’s doing something about it.
Alongside businesswoman, Maya Elisabeth, the comedian and television host is creating a medical marijuana company called “Whoopi & Maya” which plans to produce weed-infused products like creams, tinctures and bath soaks to help ease period cramps.
“I want to go nice and slow with this. I don’t want this to be a joke to people. It’s not a joke to women,” she told USA Today
Indeed for some women severe menstrual cramps can be a real problem. According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, up to 20% of women suffer from menstrual cramping severe enough to interfere with daily activities. While a separate survey by Feminax of 600 women found that 10 per cent were regularly bedridden by their period pains. Four out of 10 claimed the pain stopped them concentrating at work and some women questioned believed that their period pains had had a negative effect on their career.
But while more traditional cures for period pain have included knocking back the painkillers and slapping on a hot water bottle, various studies have shown that marijuana can in fact be an effective treatment for chronic pain.
Whoopi says that her products are for people who “don’t want to get high high,” but instead would like to find a way to relieve period pain in a calming and relaxing way.
“For me, I feel like if you don’t want to get high high, this is a product specifically just to get rid of discomfort,” she told Vanity Fair.
“Smoking a joint is fine, but most people can’t smoke a joint and go to work,” she continued. “This, you can put it in your purse. You can put the rub on your lower stomach and lower back at work, and then when you get home you can get in the tub for a soak or make tea, and it allows you to continue to work throughout the day.”
Explaining that her granddaughters, who suffer from period pain, were the inspiration behind the product launch, Whoopi went on to dismiss the claims that products catering for menstrual cramps were “niche.”
“Hey, this niche is half the population on the earth. This seems to be people flippantly blowing you off, which is what you get whenever you start talking about cramps. They weren’t thinking how do you target this? I have grown granddaughters who have severe cramps, so I said this is what I want to work on.”
The products, which launch later this month, will only be available in California to people with a medical marijuana licence because of the federal ban on the drug.
