Which Colour Wine Gives You The Worst Hangover?

We all have theories about which booze makes us the most hungover. And with wine lovers, we often debate whether red, rosé or white wine results in the strongest next-day headache.
Debate no more - for science has the answer.
Professor Steve Allsop from the National Drug Research Institute in Perth told ABC that firstly, our theories are totally true - different types of alcohol can make a hangover worse.
This is due to a number of things, including something called congeners.
Alcohols that are lighter in colour have fewer congeners [Photo: Pexels]
Congeners contribute to the flavour and colour of alcoholic drinks, and drinks higher in congeners are darker in colour.
Take vodka, for example - it’s not exactly cloudy and dark, is it? While brandy, on the other hand, is deeper and darker and happens to have more congeners than vodka.
As a whole, wine tends to have more congeners than clear spirits. and within the wine world itself red wine has more congeners than white wine.
Unfortunately, congeners aren’t as innocent as they seem; they’re a toxic byproduct of the fermenting process in some alcohols, and as the body processes them, toxins are created.
These make you feel unwell, and the more congeners you consume, the more horrendous you feel.

Congeners aren’t the only culprits, however. Allsop said that some of us react to certain additives and components in alcohol too - for example, if you’re a hayfever sufferer, the histamines in red wine mightn’t go down too well.
The same goes for colourings and preservatives - if you’re intolerant to them, bad news.
But finally, don’t blame congeners, histamines and additives for your hangover. Because in the end, the biggest determiner of how appalling your next day is is how much you drink, not what you drink.
