What's on in August: events for the kids, a Heathers re-release and festivals
It’s officially the last full month of summer and chances are you’re already plotting how to make the most of the your fleeting days in August. Whether you’re a hot weather dweller or a family of four (or more), this month still has lots of summer left in its offerings.
Grab your sunnies and fix your flower crown, here are the top things you don’t want to miss this month:
For the family
While not exclusive to August, the Buckingham Palace tour is currently open to the public. An annual event, the summer opening allows people of all ages to explore the lavish palace, giving an insider’s peek to one of London’s most famous residences. You can bring your own princes and princesses until the end of September.

If you’ve not heard of the ArcelorMittal Orbit then it’s time to plan a family trip to Stratford. Send your daredevils on the tallest and longest tunnel slide in the world with glimpses of London’s famous skyline on the way down. Reaching speeds of 24 kilometres an hour, this slide is sure to get the adrenalin pumping.
This month, for five days only, you could meet a tyrannosaurus rex, make friends with a stegosaurus and confirm whether raptors really do look like chickens. The O2 arena is hosting the family-friendly Walking with Dinosaurs from August 14 – 19. Aimed at kids, this informational show will teach you more about the prehistoric creatures – including hearing them roar. Fun for the whole family!
If June’s release of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom still has the whole family talking, there’s no shortage of dinosaur-related events. You can check out Dinosaurs in the Wild at Greenwich Peninsula where you’ll board a time machine and embark on an adventure to prehistoric times, learning more about the creatures and getting up close and personal.
If you’re seeking refuge from the sun, check out Scoop: A Wonderful Ice Cream World at the British Museum of Food. Fans of the frozen dairy snack will satiate their sweet tooth by standing in a cloud of vanilla-flavoured fog, taste-testing a glow in the dark treat and sampling an all-day breakfast flavour. If you don’t mind a sugar rush, this dairy world is a great escape for the whole family.
For the festival goer
Grab you besties, pack the boot and head to Bestival. With this year’s theme, you can join the circus and be part of the magic. Boasting fire eaters, acrobats and mutant jugglers, this festival runs from August 2 – 5. Don’t forget to pack a tent and your best top hat, the circus is waiting!

If you prefer music from another decade to today’s top hits and your favourite playlist is overflowing with 80’s chart toppers then Rewind is the place for you. Celebrating its 10th anniversary, this year’s festival is bound to be teeming with everyone’s favourite 80’s hits. Mark your calendar for August 17 – 19, as Rewind promises there will be no shortage of shoulder pads, perms and ripped tights.
If flower crowns and shoulder pads aren’t really your thing, Jamie Oliver and Alex James’ The Big Feastival may be right up your alley. Foodies and music lovers alike will gather to listen to Basement Jaxx while munching on delicious food and meeting top chefs. This festival runs from August 24 – 26, don’t miss out on world-class entertainment and a full stomach.
For the ones doing it for the ‘gram
Is there a better way to bid adieu to summer than with a cruise on the Thames, followed by a movie on the top deck under the stars? You can catch a film while cruising along London’s skyline at sunset. Featuring classics like Pretty Woman and Breakfast at Tiffany’s alongside new releases such as Call Me By Your Name and The Greatest Showman, is there a more perfect way to spend date night?
Love a good cocktail? Cocktails in the City is so popular that they’ve announced a special summer event in London. Running August 3 – 4, 24 of London’s finest cocktail connoisseurs gather in Bedford Park to school you on local offerings by the capital’s finest bars.
If you’ve heard of London’s outdoor cinema scene, then you most likely know about Film4’s Summer Screens at Somerset House. If you haven’t been, this month is the perfect time to do it. With Inception and A Nightmare on Elm Street all in the lineup, this night under the stars at the historic London venue is something you won’t want to miss.

Are you a fan of concerts with a view? Hit up The View from the Shard for one of it’s Summer of Music events where you can catch live music with a panoramic view of London. With the Hoosiers and Artful Dodger included in this month’s line up, there’s plenty of reason to head to the tourist-laden skyscraper for an exclusive night of music.
If you’re looking to inject a bit of competition into your August, check out Mallets & Hoops for some good, old fashioned English croquet. A perfect activity for fun with friends, this quintessentially British game spells summer. You can join the tournament in the Bargehouse at Oxo Tower Wharf from August 9 – 12.
If you need a break from the sun, this month also welcomes the arrival of new films to theatre. A couple of titles we’re getting excited about are: Hearts Beat Loud and Teen Titans Go! out August 3, The Heathers re-release and The Darkest Minds are in theatre August 10, and The Happytime Murders is out on August 17.
