What It’s Really Like To Have Lip Fillers

Most of us have probably looked in the mirror and wondered what it would be like to have fuller lips; but if you’ve been thinking about taking this further and actually getting lip fillers, it’s important that you understand what’s involved.

I spoke to 20-something beauty blogger Ayden Miller from Little Blog of Horrors, who got lip fillers just last week, to find out what happens during the procedure and what the results are like…

What made you want to get lip fillers and how did you decide which clinic to go to?

I’d always been quite intrigued about lip fillers, but assumed that they could only ever look quite obvious and overdone rather than natural. That was until my friend got hers done at a local Glasgow clinic and I was surprised at how natural-looking they were.

I’d done a bit of research and although I read a few horror stories about botched jobs, the positive experiences definitely outnumbered the negative ones. My friends lips looked really fantastic so I knew that if I was going to get it done, then I would go to Age Refined like she did.

How many treatments have you had? Do you get a result from a single treatment, and how long does it last?

I’ve only had one treatment so far, which was just over a week ago now and I can already see the results. I was told that your lips take around two weeks to settle and that’s when you can really judge the final result, once the swelling and bruising has gone down.

My consultant told me that they will last around 8-12 months, but that everyone’s body reacts differently. Once the two week mark has passed, I’ll be able to see how they look once they have completely settled.

At this point I’ll have the option of injecting another 0.5ml if I would like them to be bigger, but I’m actually quite pleased with how they are looking at the moment.

How many visits to the clinic did you make before your first treatment? Can you describe what happened during your visits?

Before the lip fillers, I had actually gone to Age Refined before to get botox in my frown lines. I was so happy with the results and really impressed with my consultant Michelle and her knowledge (medically as well as aesthetically, which is extremely important too), so I decided that if I was going to let anyone do my lips, it would be her.

I had a consultation before my treatment explaining the procedure, the cost, and the after-care required - I was then happy to go ahead with them there and then.

What actually are lip fillers and what does the procedure involve? Does it hurt? Could you go back to work immediately afterwards?

The brand Michelle uses is Juvederm, which is a filler that relies on hyaluronic acid rather than collagen to plump up the skin. Juvederm is a gel with a smooth consistency that is made of hyaluronic acid - a naturally occurring substance in your skin that adds volume and hydration (and is quite effective in correcting lines and grooves), A numbing cream is applied to your lips for around 20 minutes beforehand, but to be honest, I could still feel the injections as they went in. They were quite nippy, but only for a few seconds each and breathing deeply in and out helped the moments to pass quickly.

I got mine done in the evening and I was able to go to work as normal the next day. I did experience a little bit of swelling and some bruising a few days later, but I was able to cover this very easily with a nude lipstick.

What sort of after-care advice did the clinic give you?

I was told to avoid overexposure to heat and sunlight as they might increase the swelling and bruising on my lips. Also, chemical peels, laser skin resurfacing, laser skin tightening and other laser enhancements should be avoided as there is a chance that they may cause inflammation.

I was intrigued to hear that if you are unhappy with the results of your filler, Hyaluronidase can be injected into the same area and it will cause the filler agent to dissolve within a matter of days.

Healing time varies from person to person however, so some may experience redness and swelling for slightly longer than others. I was given Michelle’s card and direct number and was told to call her any time, day or night, if I had any concerns at all.

How much do lip fillers cost?

I paid £175 for 0.5ml distributed mostly in my top lip, with a small amount in my bottom lip. Even if you only want your upper or lower lip done, they have to inject a little into both as the filler changes the colour of your lips and made mine ever so slightly pinker.
