Viral TikTok video reveals 'correct' way to peel potatoes
One of life's most basic skills is peeling a potato. But it turns out we might not be doing it right. According to a viral TikTok video, those of us who peel the skin of a spud one strip at a time have got it all wrong.
In a video from user Jennifer (@jenniabs3), which has been viewed over 8.4 million times and has received over 457,000 likes and nearly 6,000 comments, she reveals her hack to peeling a potato with skill.

Instead of peeling the skin off one strip at a time, Jennifer peels up and down in a repetitive motion, with the peeler always in contact with the potato, making the job quicker and more efficient.
“The reason why potato peelers swivel back and forth is so that you can not only go down but forward when you’re peeling – so that you can peel the entire thing super fast without having to actually lift up the peeler off of the vegetable,” she explains.
TikTok users were quick to praise Jennifer’s method, with one person commenting: “This is why we need cooking classes back in high school! How am I just finding this out at 26?”
“Seriously questioning everything I do in life right now,” another added, while someone else said: “TikTok needs to get a teacher of the year award or something, because no….no I did not know that.”

Others disagreed with Jennifer’s method, with one person saying that the reason the peeler swivels like this is to accommodate for both left handed and right handed people.
“Potato peelers swivel back-and-forth because some people are left-handed and some people are right handed, that's the reason!” they explained.

“Uuuhhh no. You should never peel anything towards your body. That’s the first thing they teach you in any cooking class!” another person added.
We’ll probably still give it a go the next time we peel a potato, will you?
