Victoria Beckham brings some Spice Girl power to NYFW
Her beginnings in the fashion industry may have revolved around extremely tight, extremely short dresses but Victoria Beckham is bringing a new sense of power dressing to the catwalk.
Her AW17 collection, shown over the weekend in New York, was all about empowering women to be the best they can be. “I’ve been going on for so many years about girl power. I wish there was another way of saying that because I don’t want to sound like I’m repeating myself, but never has that been more relevant than now,” she commented after the show.
Luckily, her ideas haven’t been repeating themselves with the experimental velvet of last season disappearing to make way for mannish tailoring fit for a strong womanly mind.
Suits were kept loose – comfort is key after all – to match the long chiffon skirts printed with graphic shapes. “These are clothes for reality. And for a real woman’s life,” the designer noted.
Victoria is following in many designer’s footsteps this season. With the States in the midst of political turmoil, it seems as if the fashion world wishes to remain rooted in reality, rejecting fantasy and eclectic showpieces for designs you can actually wear.
As always, David Beckham and the couple’s four children were sat front row and centre. His appearance comes in the middle of a leaked email scandal that suggests the ex-footballer’s charity work was done simply to obtain a knighthood.
Victoria, however, is consistently on the rise. Her second Estée Lauder collection was unveiled a few days ago following a sell-out collaboration last year. The designer was coincidentally inspired by the beauty world in her fashion work, releasing a new bag style – the VB Vanity Box – in the shape of a vintage vanity case.
With the Victoria Beckham brand making up the majority of the couple’s fortune, it seems like the former Spice Girl’s positive attitude and focus on strong female role models is a real winner in our current climate.
