Vegan takeaway orders have quadrupled since 2016, research reveals
Despite the nation’s world-renowned love for fish and chips and post night out doner kebabs, takeaway lovers are swapping their Friday night go-to dish for a vegan alternative.
According to research conducted by the British Takeaway Campaign, orders of plant-based takeaways grew an astonishing 388% between 2016 and 2018 with 600,000 vegans in the UK alone.
So what are food lovers choosing from their local on treat day?
Vegetarian burgers and vegan ‘fried chicken’ are among the dishes beginning to overshadow the likes of doner kebabs and tikka masala, The Guardian reports.
The news comes as part of a nationwide shift in takeaway habits, as Deliveroo told Yahoo UK that July 2019 saw the most vegan orders placed on the digital platform to date.
The most popular vegan orders placed this month on Deliveroo include Wagamama’s Vegatsu (a plant-based version of its famous katsu curry), the Pizza Express dairy-free margherita pizza, a ‘fried chicken’ burger from Oowee Vegan and the By Chloe Guac Burger.
Although the rise in veganism is not entirely surprising, as an increasing number of food chains have introduced plant-based options to their menus in recent months.
