Would you use an app to name your baby?

As any parent-to-be will testify choosing a name for an actual human is a big responsibility.

Do you stick with something popular and risk you little one being one of four Olivers and Olivias on the pre-school register? Or, follow the Kardashian/Jenners and go for something a little more out of the baby name box?

If the decision gets too much, there’s now an app which might be able to help.

Namey, which is available on iOS and Android, uses artificial intelligence and algorithms to throw up suggestions for both boys and girls names.

Parents-to-be just need to fill out information, including their own names, origin, names of any siblings, letters of the alphabet they like and characteristics they admire.

And the app will come up with a list of potential baby names.

Namey is also the only mobile baby naming app which uses social collaboration, allowing mums and dads-to-be to save fave baby names and then create polls to send to friends and family, for them to vote on the monikers they like the best.

Research has revealed parents crave endorsement from family and friends on their choice of baby name with 80 per cent of parents saying it was “very important” that family and friends liked their baby name choice.

Whilst 73 per cent said they were likely to be influenced by family and friends’ preferences when choosing a baby name.

After a partner’s, Grandparents’ opinions on baby names were valued the most, which is interesting considering that last year a survey revealed that lots of grandparents aren’t fans of their grandchildren’s names.

The app has over 25,000 names from 12 different origins, including English, American, Arabic, Chinese, European, Indian, Japanese, Muslim, Persian, Spanish, Turkish and Urdu.

So far the most popular characteristics are beautiful, beloved and brave.

Namey founder, Jamal Khan, said: “Choosing a name is always a hotly debated topic in the run up to having a baby – it’s often hard to please everyone.

“There’s a lot of pressure on parents to find the ‘right’ name for their baby – there are often many external factors and influencers that need to be considered.

“The Namey app uses artificial intelligence and smart algorithmic matching to help parents choose a name for their baby that reflects their own names, siblings’ names, heritage and preferred character traits.”

The app has a free version to download and a premium version, costing 99p.
