Toys ‘R’ Us has announced that it’ll be extending its shopping hours for families affected by autism and special needs.

It will adjust the stores during this time so that they provide an easier shopping experience for children with autism, including making it a dimmer and quieter environment.

Music and tannoy announcements will be switched off, for example, a quiet zone provided, and the lighting dimmed.

This won’t be limited to just a few selected stores, either - every Toys ‘R’ Us shop will run the event on Sunday 6 November 2016, opening one hour prior to the usual official opening times.

Mike Coogan, Toys ‘R’ Us marketing and eCommerce director, told The Huffington Post: “Making slight adjustments to stores and creating a ‘quiet’ shopping period allows children and young adults to experience the fun in a toy shop regardless of their disability.

“We understand toys are more personal to many additional needs individuals, so being able to relax and choose something special themselves and enjoy the facilities and content of the store, the same as other children can do without concerns, will help in making their Christmas truly magical.”

Due to Sunday trading legislation the stores won’t be able to process purchases until they’ve officially opened at 11am in England and Wales or 1pm in Northern Ireland.

Parents can return later in the day to pay for shopping, while Scottish stores can carry out transactions straight away.
