Tie-dye hair is the weird new beauty trend to get your head around
As a kid, if you didn’t have anything to do during the summer holidays, you probably spent a day in the garden, tie-dying.
Remember tie-dye? Where you take an old white t-shirt, twist it into small knots, tie with rubber bands and dip in a bucket of funky-coloured dye. Hang it out to dry and TA DA, as if by magic, you’ve got a top worthy of Woodstock.
Well, looks like tie-dye hair be the next big beauty trend.
Hair trends come and go (we’ve seen bubble-gum pink hair and purple unicorn hair, not to mention glitter roots) but stylist Kelsey Pebler, based in St. Paul, Minnesota is leading the tie-dye hair trend – and completely by accident.

Talking to Allure magazine, she explains how: “I started looking at different linear designs and was really inspired by Southwestern prints…I created a design that would illustrate that on the hair.” But her experiment didn’t go completely to plan, and when she started drying her model’s hair, she noticed a tie-dye effect instead.
Pebler added: “So, I started with a different idea, but it transformed into something else…as art does sometimes”.
So, exactly how did Pebler create her rainbow work of art?
First, the hair was lightened to an icy shade of blonde, providing a neutral platform from which to work on. Pebler then applied a taping technique that she learned from Rhode Island-based hairstylist Phil Ring. Next, she painted lime crime unicorn dye onto the hair to create pale pink, purple and mint green rings.
The colour was left to process for half an hour and washed out using ice cold water – the whole process taking a total of seven hours.

With glitter being banned at over 60 festivals this summer, is this the beauty trend of 2018?
One thing’s for sure; you don’t have to worry about what to wear, because your hair is accessory enough.
But you do have to worry about styling – do you really want to carry straighteners everywhere you go? Bed hair and tie-dye is not a good look.
FYI, Pebler uses R+Co’s styling products (100% vegetarian) including a detangling spray, mousse, hairspray, and blow out balm to smooth the hair for each look.

It’s a lengthy process, but we love originality, and tie-dying t-shirts was so much fun as a kid. So give it a whirl, and let your hair shine like the setting sun.
